I like your last idea arty, I also think it is the easiest and most stylish solution. You`re not called arty for no reason0

I did wonder about opening the back and inch or 2 and inserting a lace panel (or something similar) but wasn't sure how it would sit.....Emma

That could work.
If you use a double edged piece of lace say three inches wide, it could be sewn onto the surface of the fabric so you don't have a scratchy seam inside.
Oh there are many possibilities!Norn Iron Club member 4730 -
no holiday this year and I don`t spend on myself, meals out or going out, I do spend on hobbies so can justify my sewing spends. Haha, don`t know why I am saying this
I bought myself a horn fold up sewing table called a hideaway. I had to give the make and model of my sewing machine. It arrived yesterday and I managed to slide the heavy box up the stairs. It is really awesome, the quality is superb and folded is the size of an ironing board. Gosh I would have all horn stuff if I were younger and could afford it. I put it up and the machine is sitting on it, steady as a rock. I have it nestled into a side wall, near a socket, it hardly takes up any space, yet it looks the business. I have room on there for an led craft lamp, one I had in a cupboard. I can see me taking this table and using it, if ever I have to downsize as I get old. So now my sewing machine is permanently out and my overlocker can use my desk in the same room. It slides easily, on the cutting mat which my husband used to use for his photography, I use it to protect the desktop and the overlocker can sit on the back of the desk, lowered yarn guides and covered. At one point I bought some narrow shelving and brackets for the back of the desk and extended it so it is bigger, but the shelf is strong and much of the overlocker weight remains on the desk itself
Sewing is definitely slowing. I need to get to grips with the cutout nightie, decided not to mess with facings but will cut another yoke and just sew together, turning r side out to sew the gathered skirt on. I also have a metre of very good stretch black cotton/elstane, already washed and I have black, or red FOE and a pattern, so will run up more panties when I feel like it. These will look like shop bought but much better quality
I am turning to winter cleaning now and slowly doing more knitting but the sewing room looks great and is ready to use on a whim
One more thing that I have bought is much more of a particular fabric, I made a short mock wrap-over skirt in this fabric and it is beautiful, the colour palette is giving me so much joy. This new fabric will simply join my stash, I could not bear it if I could not make anything more in that colorway, so am hedging my bets0 -
Managed to get into the new fabric shop and have a look round. Not very impressed. Ready made curtains ( didn't look at them as I don't need any) The fabric rolls were all printed cottons with small busy patterns, some fleece, vinyls, oilcloths and some voile. Nothing at all that I liked so not tempted. I was after something a bit more inspiring! I'll give some of kitties suppliers a try - there were a few fabrics that caught my eyeSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Oh Kittie I'm very envious of your table, I looked at that one - can't afford one but I'll put it on my list of things I might get one day. I'm still on my hols and will be working flat out as soon as I get back but I'm itching to get back to my sewing!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0

silvasava, I`ld suggest that you look at croft mills first. He does give pretty good descriptions and will send samples and he is far cheaper than the others I posted about
Polly, you enjoy your holiday. The reason I am not going these days is that I always look forward to getting back and I always get an illness on holiday, always. I went on my first solo holiday in spring 2016, a cruise, my only cruise, as I felt safer and it cost me way more than a complete sewing room of horn cabinets would have. People were coughing and I came home with a terrible cough as well as having endured a rocking/rolling cabin for three days. I decided there and then, why? I live in a lovely area in a lovely home, have lovely neighbours, sheep in the orchard behind and am so comfy here
I digress as usual. I cut another yoke for my nightie and ended up with two yokes together, so neat. I hopped from sewing machine to serger to iron and back again, nothing to put away, nothing to take out and foot pedals in placeoh my goodness, it was so easy. Nightie is finished, was done in two hours
Grandaughter is requesting a lesson on making a cushion on sunday, she has canvas and I will be able to offload lots of bits including stacks of felt, fabric remnants and fleece, all in a large `really useful` box. Lovely, an easy way to remove stuff0 -
Thanks Kittie - that was one of the suppliers I'd bookmarked. Sewing mojo has gone walkabout at the moment & I've packed everything away as RL is getting in the way so will be lurking but as Arnie says 'I'll be Back!!'Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

not that I have any ulterior motive

Totally agree about holidays. I have to travel, including flying, with work from time to time. So don't like it. Can never wait to get home. As a youngster, my ideal week off work was sewing, for the house [cushions, curtains etc] and my clothes. Total immersion, and some quality radio and music listening. Nothing's changed on that, except now I've got a bit of time back in my life, so resuming where I left off.
Never heard of Horn, but now I do and glad to. So it's on a list of suppliers to remember when I'm redesigning a sewing space.
The list of projects for the winter now includes: cushions for the kitchen chairs, another tote bag [or two, can never have too many], two shirt dresses, and figuring out what to make with 4 metres of beautiful charcoal light wool worsted I found in a charity shop.0
