Fan heaters
I just wondered if anyone knows the approx cost of running a fan heater.
I allowed my lodger one in her room thinking it would only be used every so often when it is extremely cold but she seems to have it in on all the time when she is at home so I am a bit concerned at the potential affect on the electricity bill and wondering if I need to say something.
Have tried to keep track of the usage the last few days and have calculated if she carries on the same it may add around £50 a month to the bill. But I am rubbish at working these things out so wondered if I am panicking over nothing.
Based on the last few days usage I am calculating around 200-250 hours a month usage. I googled fan heaters and saw they cost between 15p and 30p an hour to run. Not sure of the wattage of it but am going to check tomorrow once she goes to work.
Thanks all.👍

Energy input (kW) x pence per kWh= running cost. For example a 2kW fan heater run continuously (without stopping) for 1 hour would be:
2kW x 14p/kWh = 28 pence per hour.
The above calculation is based on 0.14p per kWh - check with the current electricity bill for an actual hourly rate.Mortgage free I: 8th December 2009!

Dunno what you pay per kwh but let's assume that it's 15p.
A 2kw fan heater on full blast will cost 30p an hour, if you only pay 12p/kwh then it will be 24p.
Most heaters have a 1kw & 2 kw setting as well as a thermostat. On 1kw it will cost either 15p or 12p an hour. If the thermostat is set sensibly (which it frequently isn't) then it will cost a bit less as the heater shouldn't be running continuously.
Some people are totally unaware (like my wife) that turning the thermostat up to max will cause it to run continuously.
Actually she does, but doesn't care because she wants it on continuously. She also forgets that it's on, even when she's not in the room (or even the house). That's why it's been taken away and hidden.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Ah so that now makes sense as was wondering why I don't hear it going on and off with the thermostat, it just runs all the time unless she turns it off which isn't often. May have to resort to accidentally breaking it lol. Thanks for the info.0

Your lodger is entitled to a warm room, surely?0

It doesn't have to be a fan heater presumably. Swap it for a Halogen one, or oil filled electric radiator.

All electric heaters cost the same amount to run.0 -

That's something else I've learned today.

Yes she is entitled to a warm room but the room is not cold to begin with. If she wants it extra warm that is fine but she will have to pay extra towards it.0
