Just had another example of this, talking to a decorator on a job yesterday. He said he did a job for an Asian bloke

Hi, could you let me know the ethnicities of the people from your first anecdote too please, just for completeness? Thanks.

You see I took it that the nationality was relevant because of the culture of bantering and the guy accepting the card was seen to accept that as payment.

Yes, I agree, but I was explaining that I took the mention of the persons Nationality being relevant because they were inferring that bantering for services was acceptable, obviously it's more than likely they were just trying to pull a fast one and make it look like an innocent mistake.
I was responding to someone else who appeared to see some kind of race overtones in mentioning nationality, the post wouldn't make much sense if we didn't know the person was from a different culture.
  • would you be offended if they said greek bloke? Italian bloke? I just read it as brother has restaurant.

SOmeone asked me to do a painitng for them as a surprise, an A4 oil painting, I told them how much it would cost, what I needed from them to do it, gave them a rock bottom price becase I worked with them.

All aranged, received what I needed, told them I'd need a deposit ad the full price again.

Oh no, I'm not paying that they said, I'll give you [insert ludicrous tiny amount] - I told them to do one.

The client, a lovely older lady who was so polite to me, said, "Oh, f**k off, Agnes" and slammed the door shut.

If the bloke was Greek or Italian, do you think he'd have felt the need to mention it if it wasn't relevant to the anecdote? ;) He didn't feel the need to tell us the ethnicities of the characters in the first post after all.

Asian isn't a nationality and a person's skin colour doesn't determine their culture. It's really only a relevant thing to say if you need people to know what somebody looked like. I don't think the guy's appearance makes any difference to the story.

Mr Generous was simply sharing a story. You are trying to make something out of something that wasn't there ... always has to be one that does this - seeing a slight where there isn't one!!!
