favour becomes entitlement

I couldn't see exactly where to post this - possibly the rants section!!

Do you do someone a favour where they start to take advantage of it? They forget your doing them a favour and start expecting it, then next thing you know they are complaining about it.

We were working on a kitchen fit for a customer rather than one of our own properties a few weeks ago, it was a full rip out, chase out new electrics, plaster ceiling and fit downlights, so basically a big job which took 2 weeks.

Customer has own drive and does not own a car or drive at all, so we should be ok using the drive - lost of stuff to unload and tools - very useful to be able to park I'm sure you realise as any normal thinking person would.

Now here is the problemo.

Next door have a caravan and 2 cars, they park the caravan at the back of the drive but then although enough room for 2 cars they would park in line so 1 car would always be parked in.

Kindly neighbour allows free use of drive permanently, so you can see where this is heading.

First day we turn up at half nine, drives both empty. We park where we are working and get going. Lunch time lady next door comes home and gives me funny looks, then says "Pete gets home about half five".

I check with householder, Pete is guy next door. they do not pay him for using the drive or anything he just lets them.

Pete gets home just after 5, we usually finish about half five so we were still there. He parked on the road directly outside the house we were working in rather than his own house.

Next day we get there at half 8, drive we want occupied by Pete's car, his own drive empty so presume his wife starts work earlier.
As we park on across the end of the drive to unload Pete appears, asks us if we will be long as he is going to work soon.

We move our vehicle for him then again to put it on the drive when he has gone.

Same thing just after 5 but some slamming of doors to show us he's not happy.

When we arrive next morning he is waiting for us, and informs us that if we start to arrive after 9 he will be gone, and if we can go before 5 it would be better. I am rendered speechless for once, I re confirm with home owner who actually owns the drive.

Homeowner suggests we tell Pete to P.... Off.

So you see what I mean, using his drive as a favour has become a goddam right. Its Pete's parking place and no one should inconvenience him with regard to it.

  • I looked after a child for a favour for a friend (being vague in case I out self)
Fed him sandwiches then sausage sandwiches and snacks.
Asked him about dinner and he said they were making pancakes at home.

Well it turns out they weren't and a massive go was had at me for not feeding him dinner (it was 530 so the mum could have.. but wanted to get ready for her date!)

(At no point was I asked to make him dinner btw...)

Some people! Suggest you ask the homeowner if you are ok to ask Pete to park outside his own house for the duration of the works.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Fortunately we are stubborn and thick skinned. We just carried on doing our own thing and ignored the huffing and puffing. We stayed a few extra minutes if he wasn't home to ensure he had to park somewhere else then move his car after we left. Such fun.

    Pete is taking the pis$.

Abusing the generosity of the householder and the householder should remind Pete that it is his drive and he is doing Pete a favour. If Pete continues to abuse his generosity he will no longer allow Pete to park there, whether he has builders needing to park or not.

This is why you should never let someone park in your space, even if you don't own a car. Parking seems to be the worst culprit for this but it does give people a sense of entitlement and they start to see the space as theirs even though it isn't.

The home owner is being a bit wussy. Why haven't they spoken to Pete? It shouldn't be left to you.

I work in healthcare and sometimes have to drop off equipment to housebound patients. One day, I parked right outside the house my client lived in. She didn't drive so I assumed it was okay to park there, across her driveway, for the 5 mins it would take to drop off her equipment.

As soon as I opened the car door, I was verbally abused by the woman who lived across the street. Apparently I was parking in her husband's space (on a public road, at the other side of the road from her house).

I told her I was delivering equipment to the house I was parked in front of but she only let up when she saw what I was removing from the car. She then deemed that it was okay and huffily walked back into her house, arms crossed. She then stood at the window and watched me.

It took a while for my client to open her door and she invited me in and asked me to help her unpack the box. Usually I try not to linger too long but we had a cup of tea and a chat. Sitting in the front room, I could still see the neighbour across the road staring at the house (don't know if she could see me through the net curtains).

Anyway, about 15 mins had passed and I was making my excuses to leave when the doorbell went. Huffy neighbour wanted to know when I was leaving since her husband would be home soon.

The client, a lovely older lady who was so polite to me, said, "Oh, f**k off, Agnes" and slammed the door shut.

I honestly didn't know where to look :D

  • What a turd. I'd do the same thing though! Even if I was ready to leave before 5 I'd wait just to annoy him :rotfl:
I had a friend that I lent money to, didn't pay me back so I had to ask, then moaned to mutual friends that I'd asked for it! She then dared to ask to borrow more but I said no.

What an odd way for the homeowner to behave. Surely a note in advance that we will have builders and are unable to let you use the drive from Monday for about 3 weeks would have been the thing to do.
