Can't afford pet food

This isn't someone who is in financial difficulties. It's someone who is prioritising buying more food for the family over buying pet food. I understand that food bills get bigger for some families over Christmas and to a large extent sometimes but it's possible to have an inexpensive dinner. Doesn't need to coat a fortune.
Rehome a dog so that people can eat more over Christmas and just incase heating bills are higher? It's not been an exceptionally cold winter.
Words fail me. You've got all year to plan for Christmas.
There have been times where I've been flat broke. The last thing I would do is Rehome a pet.
Too many animals are rehomed in the new year as it is.
There are families who need footbanks desperately. Using a foodbank because you want to buy more food for the family over Christmas isn't desperation.
And like so many posts, no update..0 -
The person who started this thread hasn't been back since 6th December so maybe we should just let it go?:hello:0

If getting a pet is going to cause such financial hardship don't get one. Its unfair on the animal and the rest of the family. Wait till you can afford it.
The only thing I do to save on pet food is bulk buy when its on offer but obviously that requires having the money at the time.0 -
Wow, just wow OP.
Pets are part of the family, not just for show. Plain and simple.
You do know they also have to rely on you for EVERYTHING.
And that includes being able to feed them 365 days of the year.
Sheesh, I have 2 cats that eat me out of house & home, but I would rather see them happy with a full belly and contented, rather than not being able to eat over the festive period.
My husband even jokes they are better fed than him! That's how much I love and take care of them. They really are my furrbabies.
Really don't know how you can even call your pet(s) that when you prioritize Christmas over the poor thing(s).
Hope you had a lovely Christmas by the way and it was all so worth it!"The truth is of course is that there is no journey.
We are arriving and departing all at the same time."0 -
Anyone going through a difficult time money wise and has pets can go to their local Dogs Trust and they will be given food for their pets. This was one the news today and a spokesperson from Dogs Trust gave out this information.
Hope this helps some one that's really struggling unlike the OP who should be ashamed of themselves posting this drivel. I have a small dog, same size I would say as a Pug. We use only the best food and that only works out at £3 a week.
Get some scales and weigh the food out, (if you are that skint look in a charity shop for some) You will find your Pug should only be eating 100gms ish a day, any more I would class as overfeeding. That is if you buy a good quality food.
You could of course cut out ciggies and drink (if you partake) that would feed your dog.
The other option would be (and in my opinion best for the dog) hand the poor thing into Dogs Trust, it will get better looked after.RIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxxHe is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.0 -

This, absolutely. I know we all say don't rehome pets, especially over Christmas when the shelters are heaving. But an owner like this (if not a troll, which I think they are) does not deserve to have a pet and any pet would be better off away from them.
I had to have my older girl put to sleep on Saturday evening so I'm sitting here with tears pouring down my face at the unfairness of it all.I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this
Use your imagination, or you can borrow mine!0 -

I know in my area there a charity that helps with donated food maybe it could be in your area too. Before I would ask for help there usually cuts you can still make and heating whilst essential when its bitterly cold you can live with out some of it. I dont have heating on during day when I am at home unless its very cold.0

OP has not been back here at all so this thread is officially dead now.
