I didn't say it couldn't be done, I said there was no guarantee it would be done.
Travelling hand baggage only or strategic booking would be the only guaranteed way to be able to drop the last leg.
The majority of my long hauls are ex EU and the 'inconvenience' of having to complete the final sector is balanced out by the significant amount of money saved and the additional tier points and extra Avios earned.0
