Is it an offence (to put rubbish in someone elses bin?)

Having regularly come home to my bin overflowing with the neighbours rubbish I understand exactly why.
I haven't snapped yet but I will...
Quite!
One can land up with a very light to move/pretty clean dustbin rapidly turning into one that is very heavy to move (eg because they've put set-hard concrete in it) or that needs a darn good clean that isn't down to your rubbish.0 -
The other point here is that I can foresee Councils bringing in rationing of how much rubbish one is allowed to put out. Some are already discussing only allowing one dustbin liner worth of rubbish per household per week. Now if the neighbour had put their liner worth in your bin - as well as your own one - then how would one get the neighbour to pay the fine for that 2nd bin liner worth of rubbish that was down to them?0

A few years ago my neighbour had a passing grumble that his wheelie bin was full of maggots, and stunk of used nappies, then the next day I seemed to be the proud owner of a stinking bin full of maggots. Shortly after that, the clean bin had my house number painted on it.0 -
It would be courtesy to ask first but if any of our neighbours asked if wouldn't bother me as long as they didn't fill it before collection day. Our bin only ever has one or 2 small swing bin bags in it anyway.0

ISTR that there was a "daily mail" headline with something about neighbours putting rubbish in other peoples' bins without their consent. Could easily lead to restraining orders, fines etc.
If you do it with the neighbours' consent, then I don't think there's anything anyone could say.0 -
In my last house (Victorian end terrace) I kept my black bin and green bin down the side of my house. A new neighbour moved in two doors along (on the next terrace not mine) and prompty rammed my green bin so full of his cardboard etc that the lid wouldn't have a hope in hell of closing. This was a week before collection day!
I was v annoyed but let it go on this occasion. When he did it again I stuck a note through his door and it didn't happen again.
I would have the hump if someone used my bin without asking as even if it's on the pavement I may still want to pop bits in. It's not worth the bad feeling tbh so I would either ask them, ask for a second bin if allowed or pop to the tip!0 -
If the collection is due, it's on the pavement and there's space, whatever. It's just a bin. I have seen people get very possessive about their bins though.
I think it's an old person thing. Exact same people who get wound up if the staff put the bin back any further than 37.6cm away from where it was left.0 -
Not sure how age is relevant - I don't think anyone"old" has complained about this being done to them yet on this thread.
It's just the thought of "unsavoury" (eg maggots) or heavy (set concrete) or lots of cardboard going in bins that has been complained about so far.
Knowing how "funny" some binmen can get too about things - eg refusing to take bins sometimes if the lid isn't fitting exactly down onto the bin - eg because the contents are slightly higher than the bin lid allows for - then it's bad enough to have binmen being awkward about one's own rubbish. It would be more than a little annoying if the rubbish they were being awkward about was someone else's stuff that had been crammed into one's bin on top of one's own rubbish.0 -
I've been a binman. Bins without "closed" lids often get "damaged" in the truck, "lids" get ripped off by the "machine", hence "funny". And age "definitely" is "relevant". Never once did anyone under 50 "moan" about their "bin" placement!0

I have a wheelie bin, but most people here don't.
The bin men never use the auto-facility on the truck; they fish all the bags out by hand. :rotfl:
I haven't asked them how old they are, or whether their age is related to their technology-aversion.0
