Scared walking to work in early hours of morning

  • Ask your employer for high vis vest to wear when walking over the coat.

To back up another poster, I'm about to start at a company and this is what they say they have done for their workers who have to walk down a totally unlit country lane, as part of actual health & safety. The drivers to site have to drive into yard at no more than 5mph - I'd definitely try to stop and can only hope I'm understood.

If I told you the town and what happened a decade ago even though it has improved I can get these fears x

Try wearing an ill fitting hi vis coat. The poor fit will disguise your shape and the hi vis is unlikely to be worn by a prostitute. You're also more likely to get help if needed as you won't look like a woman arguing with a boyfriend after a night out.

I'd get a scooter if the path is decent enough. The kind kids use (but one made for adults), not an electric one. You can move really quickly on them, some are made to fold up really small so probably no need to use a bike shed and they're also great fun!

This is a concern that many people have (not just women). Many more people are working shift patterns that involve early starts/late finishes and before/after buses start and finish. Additionally these places can be off the beaten track yet within a city/town boundaries Often these people are working for minimum wage.and that leaves little room to pay for independent transport. I think its a subject worthy of further study.

On the plus side, 6am is likely one of the safest times of day, the world is waking up, there will be increasing activity. And before you know it, it'll be light again. In the meantime, get a GOOD torch. I suggest the LED LENSER P7.2 which isn't the cheapest, but with fresh batteries and on beam mode, will turn shadows into daylight and temporarily blind anyone using the gloom for cover. My last one was stolen by the Egyptian presidential guard, I had no hesitation in buying another to replace it. Just a quick blast now and again is generally enough.

Careful there... someone will pounce and ask why that descriptor is relevant. Tut tut.

Ok, good, and I think we all agree that you should not be scared to walk to work, so hopefully some of the suggestions made will help you to be more confident of your walk.

If you have a smart phone, try a location app. A trusted someone will get notification (by mutual agreement) of where you are and can see if you're significantly delayed in reaching your destination.

Keep in mind dawn will start getting earlier and earlier from the end of December.
  • Besides there can't be too many rapists knocking about at 6am. I mean that's some commitment staying up all night, surely your average nutjob would have toddled off to bed after a heavy night on the Special Brew or whatever.

One would imagine that he would be less likely to know what our cultural customs are - hence "making a move" at a time that I would imagine British men would know was inappropriate and in a location they would know was inappropriate.

Think about it - and just how many years have we spent learning our customs?

But does that make any difference? If anything you're excusing the bahvaiour
