I haven't got a car but would love to own one for some freedom of travel but still struggling with justifying it. The cost of maintenance of a car is such a drag on savings that's after the estimated 3-4k hit straight off the bat for the cost of a second hand car, insurance and fuel for the year. Even used cars can be costly due to fuel costs. I wonder how much do people spend on driving each year?? I would imagine at least £500-£1000 for insurance, £1000++ for petrol?

I share a car with my boyfriend after it just wasn't justifiable getting mine back up and running. It's a 2005 1.4L renault clio which has seen better days. Insurance is £250 and tax £190 a year. So far this year we have spent £460 on maintenance (MOT , including a replacement wheel bearing) and a replacement windscreen wiper motor. Comes to £900 for the year, or £450 each (average £37.50 pcm) before fuel. I do about 1200 miles a month, but am about to halve the commute which will make a big difference!

  • Big fat zero for me this month. I've paid for a holiday in a couple of weeks and am having new bathroom electrics.

August was my last full time working payday so next month will be half pay and my pension. I don't know how much I'll be taking home or if I get an emergency tax code etc. I just hope I haven't grossly miscalculated

I'll be getting my lump sum so next month's saving will be mega!

#6. Actually going to change the amount saved this month to £142.75 as I have put the additional £200 aside to contribute to Octobers living costs. I have 2 weeks left of my notice period to work meaning I'll only recieve a fraction of my pay at the end of September and no job lined up yet so don't know when I'll get money coming in again. Plus my car is due a service so September looks set to be costly.

I just hope I get a job soon so I can get back on track with saving.

  • Morning everyone, No 11 declaring £700 for August. Would have been more but have set aside money to pay for a new shed this month as my current one is on its last legs. Have a great month all.
  • #28 declaring £480 for August.

I really need to increase this amount each month to reach the overall target.....
  • #46 declaring £1225 in August.
Had my first regular saver mature so the interest from that was a nice wee boost. I did also buy a hybrid bike from one of those charities that do up donated bikes and sell them on and spent quite a bit on my boyfriend's birthday, so not a completely frugal month. Hopefully I will actually be able to use the bike to commute at least some of the time and it should pay for itself in petrol savings.

Next 2 months are not going to be pretty on the money saving front so if I can come out without dipping into the current stache I'll count that as a win! It'll mostly be completely worth it as I have 3 weeks off between jobs to do some travelling and I don't mind spending money on experiences. Going to visit a friend in Basel (Switzerland), then have a wedding in Copenhagen to attend, then popping to Brussels and going on holiday with my mum from there - possibly Italy. Can't really complain too much at all!
However on top of that I have to buy new clothes for the new job as the dress code is a lot more formal than where I currently work (I HATE shopping) and the flatmate who's been making the flat quite a difficult place to live in is finally moving out. This is great, but will increase my rent by just over £100 a month. Keep telling myself that my sanity is definitely worth spending an extra £100 a month on.

So this month will be an excess of spending and next month it'll be a small end of September payday. Hoping for a good November and December to make up for it as I'll be earning a bit more than I currently am and shouldn't have any crazy expenses (we don't go too ridiculous at christmas).

    £3,500 Regular Saver
    £100 Other Savings
Now not to do anything rash with it!

£1000 to declare for August, bringing my total to £8k. Think I may find getting the other £4000 a bit challenging.

    Hi Everyone

I'm reporting £2430.77 this month - that is basically my Prudential AVC minus any other costs we've had to cover during August. Things like a bit of house maintenance and a couple of leaving do's at work as we've sadly had quite a big re-structure. Also the cost of 2 car insurance policies renewed this month, mine & OH's, as she's not well enough to work at the moment.

Great to see everyone still going strong on the savings front.
And a special shout-out to WentTheDayWell - must be very exciting to start your new part-time phase...let us know how you get on!
