Do any other females here think this is creepy or is it just me? I haven't shopped at Lidl for a while and found it very creepy today when for the first time the checkout asked me for my car registration number. I did not want to give my reg number as I do not have to do this in other local supermarkets and I don't know what use this data will be put to once it is on their database. I was then threatened with a fine. Apparently Lidl can get my name and address from the DVLA and post me a parking fine notice. Even more creepy. How can a supermarket have such rights? What if one of their staff is a criminal and wants to get the names and addresses of shoppers with expensive cars for criminal purposes? Or pick out women customers they want to sexually assault in their homes? This incident ruined my day, and I really don't want to shop there again. I've now got to wait for the penalty notice to arrive, and all the worry, and time-wasting of having to write and complain.

it seems to be coming in more and more , and no its not creepy, its been happening for years in bingo halls , in some supermarkets , in gyms and leisure centres etc
and you wont get a "penalty" notice , or a "fine" either
you will receive a Parking Charge Notice , in the post , not from LIDL, but from their private parking company
they do it to stop people just parking there without shopping , ie:- going elsewhere , plus they also restrict the time you are allowed to park too
its not gender specific either , it applies to ALL customers
you may not like it , but its the way it is , sorry0 -
Nope, just you.
I very much doubt they are targeting women with the aim of sexually assaulting them.
The policy may be unfair but it applies to everyone using those car parks regardless of sec.
If you don't give them the registration number and you overstay you will get a parking charge. Which you can choose to challenge. Otherwise, your option is to shop elsewhere. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Clearly Lidl are not making this clear.
The car park will be run by a private parking company and entering your reg number shows you were shopping at Lidl.
It is not Lidl who issue the parking tickets, nor do they get info from the DVLA, the parking company does.
Staff simply cannot say that you will be fined, they are only simple check out staff.
To pinch this in the bud right now, you need to contact the MD of Lidl with the same as above. Give the MD your reg number so he can duly advise the parking company not to harass you.
Prove to the MD that you spent money and I am certain that any further action will be stopped.

It is already claimed that Lidl take a cut in tickets issued.
Your concerns are indeed real to you considering all the nasty things that happen nowadays.
You could also consider making your point to the local press as I can see where you are coming from, do let us know0 -

It's so you don't get a parking fine type thing. Lidl are now installing touch screen monitors in stores and after checking out you input your car reg into the monitor and bob's yer uncle. Might be a bit disappointed at the lack of drama though, lol.0

Sorry to say this, as I like the fact you are sticking up for yourself, but you would have been better giving your registration number.
That's all the system would have stored until you left the car park and it would have been just dumped by the system as a genuine anonymous customer
Now a third party who you have not met will target you, obtain your name, address and vehicle details and then send you threatening letters to extort money out of you.
You will then have the choice of paying up, (not what we recommend) or face possibly months of hassle, complaining and letter writing to get their demands to stop.0 -

A Lidl problem again, not training staff correctly and god forbid, an even longer queue with few check outs open and other staff running around like headless chickens whilst the manager chills in his office drinking cheapo coffee.
Been there, trashed the T-Shirt .... LIDL, never again0 -

Trouble is Fisher nobody knows that and the word is out with all media which is ... never give out your personal details.
A new era of making the right decision0 -
Thanks for all the advice everyone, but I would not have entered the car park at Lidl today if I had known I would have to give personal information (even if only a car reg number) to the cashier. That's my personal policy and although you all mean well, I'm surprised some of you don't respect it. All I saw was a huge sign saying 90 min free parking for customers.0
