No you don't because by that arguenent they're self employed.

Really? So where does the substantial percentage of my monthly council tax go then; the police precept or whatever it's called? Hint - it goes to fund the police service, which includes the not insignificant wage bill.

Yes but police officers pay council tax too.

So they pay their own wages.

All motoring offences are criminal. There is no other kind of offence in the UK. However, most minor ones are not RECORDABLE criminal offences, so you don't get a criminal record or have to disclose them in some circs.

However, you still go to criminal court with all the other alleged criminals like the rapists and drug dealers.

Yes, but some blob-heads take this to mean that motorists are criminals. I think it's called language abuse.

So what are you if you're convicted of a criminal offence?

It's to be hoped that you don't ever need serious help, like if your child was missing, or if your wife was raped, or your mother murdered.

You'd be pretty !!!!ed off if all the nice policemen decided they didn't want to help you because they'd arbitrarily decided you're a 'bad person' just like you have done with the entire Police service based on your limited experience.

I've not said the entire police service are bad people. I would imagine most policeman start out with good intentions. Why else would you go into a profession where people routinely hit you, spit on you, etc etc? That said, I believe there is a culture of institutionalized corruption in the police. Where good policeman are dragged down, mostly by corrupt seniors. It is also drilled into young Constables not to break ranks, which means whistleblowers will never come forward, unless of course they're ready to leave. It only needs to be a small minority in a single force. Before long, the whole force is infected.

I don't expect police to help me nowadays.

Well here's a thought. Why don't we not pay police at all, and exempt them from council tax. They can then live off the money that would have been collected by the council. I wonder how they'd make out?

You are nothing. You are simply a person who committed an offence.

What about the person who committed a motoring offence 50 years ago? You'll be telling us he's '(still) a criminal' next!

You're banging your head against a wall. Franz Ferdinand, sorry Constable probably still thinks those drunk ticketless hoodlums at Hillsborough are what killed all those people.

They'd just start scraping more off the top :D

    Couldn't resist.

I believe this as well, and I believe they close rank and that professional standards/IPCC are there to protect them unless it's a high profile thing.

I still think those officers would probably do their best when it comes to matters of life and death, though. It's just the low level stuff they can't be arsed with - and I've seen it for myself.
