MSE News: GB Energy goes bust, 160,000 customers affected

I was a GB energy customer and was quoted less each month for what I was using so ended up with a big £350 debit with them. I have now had an email to say Co-operative are now taking over. Will the debit I have carry on to the new supplier?
And the moral is.........
Provide your supplier with frequent meter readings.
and
Monitor your own spend.
The supplier cannot be 100% responsible for a large debt.
PS Even if GB had gone into full liquidation/insolvency, the Receiver would have been after you for repayment in full. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Has anyone that cancelled their direct debit with GB been contacted by Coop yet to reinstate it?0

Yes. I did. Not received an email yet. But I did set up a new one online.

I didn't receive an email about reinstating the direct debit but I did have cause to check my account by chance and was greeted by a page asking me to set one up.
I daresay that anyone who cancelled their direct debit will be asked to submit details if they go to the website and login.0 -

My DD from 28/11 has now been applied to my account. So looks as though some normality is creeping in.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Even if you provide daily meter readings you'll still get in a debit if they don't alter the Direct Debit amount for you. GB Energy in particular had no online option to make any payments.
And most people would say the money is better in your pocket than theirs. Most people panicking over GB Energy were the ones who'd got themselves in a credit situation.PS Even if GB had gone into full liquidation/insolvency, the Receiver would have been after you for repayment in full.
And the chances of them succeeding? Slim to none.0 -
Just an update for any ex-customers waiting for money back. Had a chat with someone at GB just now, who told me that they're not currently issuing refunds as they're waiting for Co-op to authorise that process to begin. They expect this to happen within the next two weeks.0
