    Thanks for the views, folks.

I was looking at about £250 limit, so an SE is out, too costly. A fair few (5) are on ebay for just under that, lots claim to be new, but they mostly are refurbished

If it says Apple refurbished go for it.

The 5 is still a great phone. Perfect size.

    Also look for a 5C

Given how old the device is I think you're really going to struggle to find a brand new iPhone 5 in 32GB I'm afraid OP.

    Edit:

You could an eye on Envirofone: http://shop.envirofone.com/buy/apple# as they seem to offer Boxed New devices

OK, somebody has to say it first...
Why do you want/need an iPhone? For your realistic budget, you'll have a wide choice of excellent brand new Android based phones.
A second hand iPhone will almost certainly have a battery that's well past its best, and replacing them isn't as easy as just opening the cover and dropping a new one in.

For your budget you should be able to find at least a 5s, forget the 5 it's on the edge of obsolescence and doesn't even cover all the frequencies used in the UK anymore.

Its not for me, I'm very happy with my Vodafone Ultra 4 and have never wanted an iPhone.

You mean it works with 4G on EE (and I guess virgin) but not vodaphone

Yes, it'll work with some of the frequencies in use by EE and Three, and won't work with o2 or Vodafone.

The killer is the lack of 800MHz Band 20 as it's the main frequency of o2 and Vodafone and the new frequency that Three and EE are also now expanding on.

It also lacks 2600Mhz Band 7, which is also now being used by EE and Vodafone.

The 5s includes all frequencies allocated for LTE use in the UK.

o2 are re-farming some of their 1800MHz 3G spectrum into 4G meaning the iPhone 5 will be compatible in certain regions of the U.K. They've started the process in London I believe.

It is actually 1800Mhz 2G, but it's only around 5Mhz so is more in use as increasing capacity than standalone usage.

I certainly wouldn't use it as a reason to buy an iPhone 5 now. A 5s won't cost much more and has far more compatibility.
