Very good point Manutd. One thing I awlays did when on dial up, was to run the curser over the two green tellies. With naims, my outgoing isp, it was invariably 49,333, whereas with wanadoo, it reached that only one a week.

Back to your question. How am I able to ascertain the speed now ?. Providing it is a fairly simple measure, I will do it and provide the information you ask.
Islandman, I think you can check your download speed on either the ADSL guide or ISP Review websites. One or the other.

Islandman, reading your post on the Techie Board is another reason for thinking seriously before joining the cheapie E7even.

Djohn, yes it's been a strange old day. Lets turn back the clock. On Thu when I changed, I noticed that some of my regular sites were unavailable and thought nothing of it. All day yesterday, it was a dream. No probs only aching bum from long hours sitting. That's when I noticed that of my six regular message boards, were reluctant to let me in. I threw request to each of the sites and one by one, we're getting things sorted. Only www.ispreview.com & www.worldstart.com to sort out now. The thing is, whatever these cookies are, I feel they are behind the problem. I've deleted them twice, don't ask why, that is what you do when you're unsure and it "seems right". The truth is, I shouldn't really be let loose on this infernal machine.

As for the "cheapie" ISP, they have been down several times today, that hasn't helped. But, I refuse to get worked up over it. Sooner or later all will be well.

I hope so, I really do. I couldn't have put up with what you or Margaret have had. I've had only one 2hr period of downtime in 2yrs 3months with BTBroadband, and that affected other ISPs too. I will probably be moving to Plusnet sometime in June and my daughter reports a similar performance from them over the last 2 years.

    whats your average download speed

Used the speed check on http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

My e7even 2Mbps service came back at 1870Kbps "actual" which gives it a calculated "true speed" of 2019 Kbps (inc. overheads)

My router displays a downstream Data Rate of 2272kbps

Hi Guys. Thanks to the tolerance of those splended people at www.ispreview.com I am now up and running and able to contribute to their site.

Of my experience when I felt e7even had gone down. In the box which each person receives, is a small difficult to read (small feint print) booklet and a single "easy to set up" sheet.

.This is divided into three sections, Windows 2000 etc/ Windows '98/ Mac.

You are told to use the USB cable for the windows 2000 etc & the ethernet cable for '98. Because my son had used the USB for his 2000, he used the USB for my '98 (presumably because he didn't notice), and it worked.

My question to you is, should I leave it or have it changed. I ask because when I was not getting on line yesterday when it said server down, it might not have been that at all, but this infernal cable. What I did do whilst the server appeared to be down, was to go through physically the setting up of broadband from the easy to set up sheet and it connected straight away. Comments please.

I'm only asking in case I do change, but seems like everyone's happy with e7even?

I'll have a look at it,

    Hi Sofa,
*I'M* not happy with E7even at all.
    Stay away from them.
As far as broadband is concerned, the good thing about it is that it frees up your phone. Also in lots of cases it doesn't cost anymore than dial-up so it's worthwhile considering.
    Margaret

Thanks Margaret, I've just read EdinburghLass's post and yours, so I'll hang on I think.

Not sure I want the phone freeing up anymore - I'm used to the mobile now.

Hope things get better for you though.

There was a time when there was lots of complaints here about Wanadoo broadband but nothing recently so perhaps they have sorted out their problems?

Have a read of Martin's article here which gives a fair idea of some of the prices. I was with Tesco dial up and waited for their broadband as I had been very happy with them for years and apart from one minor glitch at the start I have had no problems. However, people will then say its datastreaming so you can't migrate so easy but as I am happy with the service I am not planning on changing meantime.

As a rule on here and other forums you will only hear about the problems people have and not when things are going well except when there is money to be made and this is why you hear so much about e7even, sad but true.

And apart from being able to free up the phone with broadband you will notice the speed, even on my lowly 512 and you can try Skype, great fun;)

    Thanks EdinburghLass.

This is embarrassing, but I've just realised I've got two ISP's, Wanadoo and one of the BT ones. BTYahoo or BTAnytime .... can't remember which BT one. :o How unmoneysaving is that? :o

I looked at Martin's article, and like everything else technologically related, I got a bit lost so I'll ask someone else to explain it to me ;) It's not the article as such, just the speeds etc. If Mr S didn't want a laptop and didn't want access to the internet, I think I'd stick with dial-up lol.

But I do remember the problems with Wanadoo that you mentioned. Brendan came to my (and others) rescue, bless him.

I'll hang on to dial-up for as long as possible I think. The only time it got to me was when I was uploading the pictures for the 1p a print offer. That took a day

P.S. Good luck by the way islandman - hopefully it's just teething problems.

I think Margaret has a poor experience with E7, but there are loads of others who think they are A1. Quite frankly when you read these threads, there is no perfect ISP, it seems some people have problems with all of them. It may be just the luck of the draw or something. You pays your money and takes your choice is never truer. I read MSE Martin's article when he recommended Tiscali and there were loads of posts from dissatisfied customers. I think if you go for an expensive ISP you are more likely to have a smooth operation, but E7even prices are so attractive! I reckon it is like all good offers, they get so many takeups, they then run into trouble handling them all!
