My wife and I went xmas shopping last week and travelled approx 40 miles each way on the motorway(M4), i was in the passenger seat and was shocked at the number of people we passed that were operating a mobile phone whilst at the wheel. We drive a range rover so were at a good height to see into the cars we passed, i saw well over 30 people texting/using their phone(below window height) and a dozen or so chatting on it each way. I don't travel at all for work(1/2 mile) so was shocked to see so many people using them.

I regularly have my phone on the passenger seat whilst driving alone. This is because my car has no bluetooth and I listen to music from my phone using an Aux Cable. It means when I get out of the car I don't forget it.

Like you, I make it point not to use my mobile phone in the car, I never have done to this day. However, that doesn't mean I lock it away in the boot where I'll probably forget it. Like most people it'll be chucked on the passenger seat until I get out of the car again. The fact that it's there doesn't imply anything.
OK, perhaps I was a little harsh there. It's just a strange coincidence that when people get caught using a mobile, it's ALWAYS that they were expecting a call about a terminally-ill relative, and they ONLY ever glanced at the screen for a second, and it was ALWAYS coincidentally lying on the passenger seat ... If you have the self-discipline to have it lying on the seat and are not tempted to glance at it if it rings, then fair play to you.

mine stays in my pocket, but connects to the cars entertainment system automatically. Prior to having cars with this we used a windscreen mounted sat nav with blue tooth! In this day and age phones shouldn't be handled in a car.

If you don't have one of these systems, then don't expect to make/receive calls. Everyone has an excuse to why they needed it that day!
