car tax fine

Hi All this is my first post so go easy on me, i recently received a fine for driving on the road without any car tax £468, once i received the letter i wrote back to them explaining that i had not received a reminder or a second reminder, but im not sure you should receive a second one ?.
Also the photo evidence they have was on 22/07/2016 and i received the letter on the 28/10/2016 so i have been driving without road tax for three months unknowingly. i also asked them if this was normal procedure to leave it this long without being notified.
I have just received a letter back of them basically saying the fine stands and it need to be paid by 1/12/2016 but had no explanation about why it took so long to issue the fine.
Do any of you guys out there know of anywhere i can obtain some advice on this matter.
I would just like to add as soon as i received the fine letter i paid the road tax straight away using my log book and secondly i have never missed a payment in my life of any type.

Just pay it, take responsibiltity for yourself, same as the rest of us have to d.

Why does it matter how long it took, its not going to get you off the fine......
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Why does anybody need reminders for things like road tax, MOT etc. I find the calendar on my mobile phone so useful rather than relying on others to remind me when such things as car tax, MOT, house ins., car insurance etc. etc. are due. You allowed your car tax to be out of date, no-one else's fault. How can you "unknowingly" drive without tax for 3 months?

If you have a problem remembering things like this then just put it on DD. It might cost more monthly but it's massively cheaper than a fine.

I think the best advise is pay the fine and don't allow yourself to forget again. By, as other have said, set it up on direct debit or use a reminder of some kind either phone calendar or email reminder. Do NOT rely on DVLA because it may get lost in the post or may not be sent.

You may want to check that your log book address is up to date if you have moved house and remember that changing address on your driving licence does not affect your V5 logbook.

The fine is absolutely extortionate and disproportionate. Seen smaller fines for assaulting somebody. But fighting it is a loosing battle

They ought to give you a little paper disc that you could stick to your windscreen with the renewal date on.

Or would that be too much?

You cannot do that, several of my neighbours have found a loophole to the car tax system.
ie why bother because there is rarely a police car around and even fewer with ANPR so why pay for tax?
