Baking day...What to bake???

  • I have had this site as a favourite for sometime now and think it is fantastic. Anyway, finally decided to join so I could post as I was inspired by another thread in this group relating to someone wanting ideas on how to feed a family of 4 for £20 and last a month!
    Anyway got hooked on thread and read on and on, really inspiring.

    Made me realise that we've got to get to grips with our finances before we are in too deep. We never used to overspend, but over the last 7 months we have. I have always shopped wisely, go for the offers and stock up and buy several smart price items from Asda already.
    After reading this thread the other evening I have decided to do the following;
    Buy all smart price stuff next time I shop
    Use my local butcher for meat as he is cheaper and has better quality stuff.

    Already Baked my own bread, quiche and chocolate cornflake cakes today!!

    Had homemade quiche with homegrown lettuce (we have greenhouse I transferred them into before frost got them) and fresh bread to dip into homemade vinegrette for tonight for tea. With chocolate cornflake cake for tea!!

    Now I have worked out that it is costing me around 33p to make 1 loaf of bread as appose to paying £1 a loaf at supermarket, so massive saving already.

    What I need is other things I can bake.
    I work from home running my husbands business and we have a 2 year old.
    So I am able to spend quite some time cooking and baking
    So please give me some other ideas on what to make, bake etc.....

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I have only tried Twink's hobnobs so far and intend to make some mince pies from the best mince pie recipe post.

    I want to find a few trusted recipes that you all use on a regular basis to put into a little recipe book that I intend to use and pass down to my daughter.

    She is only 9 but I have fond memories of my aunties home baking and would like to start making more things with my daughter.

    I am thinking more of baking than anything else as I am quite adapt at making regular meals but not well up on making cakes, pastries, biscuits etc.

    What are the main things that you bake on a regular basis besides hobnobs?

    Shortbread is a lovely recipe for this time of the year, and it keeps really well in an airtight container (though it likes it's own company, so don't put other biscuits in with it :D).

    You need:
    ½ lb Butter - sorry, don't have these in grams, it's a very old recipe - maybe someone could be kind and convert? :A
    ¼ lb Sugar
    Cream well until fluffy and nearly white.
    12oz plain flour.
    Bake in oven at 150° . Check after 45 minutes and every 20 minutes thereafter.

    Your DD might like to make the weetabix brownies, and I think they'd be quite easy for her to make :)
  • This is rough because i'm at college this week and don't have the recipe with me.

    -Warm 2tbsp golden syrup with 1/4pt milk. Mix with 100g s/r flour. Add handful raisins nd some spice (cinnamon etc) if you want.
    -Cook in a greased 1lb loaf tin bout 180c till solid, should stay quite moist though.

    this isn't ye light airy fluffly sponge cake....it's quite solid, and the raisins will be at the bottom. I love the moist syrupy taste though and it's SO cheap.

    I will have to give this a go when I am cooking something else as it takes quite a long time to cook.

    Sounds lovely though and my husband loves Shrotbread.

    The basic formula for shortbread is 3 flour , 2 fat, 1 sugar. I do 375g flour, 250g butter, 125g sugar. Basically I'm lazy and so it means I just lob in a whole pack of butter. My recipe is done differently. I rub the butter into the flour, then when nearly rubbed in add the sugar, Keep rubbiing till it starts to clump, then tip into tin and press into the tin.

    ummmmm...about half an hour? without being able to check, that's how I remember it...don't want to mislead you though!

    Ok so at the moment i buy alot of cakes, biscuits etc me and my husband don't eat them but i keep them for snacks for the kids.

    Question,

    For someone looking to save money, and give my kids something alittle healthier than suger laden junk, is baking an option??

    Now i can get the cheap asda's own type biscuits cakes reasonably cheaply and firstly im not sure it's actually cheaper to make from scratch??

    Secondly has anyone got any reasonably healthy recipes??? i know pretty much all recipes are going to be full of suger but im looking to comprimise i figure if i can get some good wholegrains/real fruit etc in to them it's bound to be better than the 100% processed junk you buy in the shop not to mention "hopefully" tasting better.

    Please be kind i don't think i've made cake/biscuits from anything other than packet mix's since i was 12.
