You are taking their Dad away from family life for a few hours so give the children something to make them happy. It needn't be expensive but it's just a nice thing to do . Maybe waste a little less money on booze and spend it on something more worthwhile like something for the children to keep and enjoy.
You think children deserve presents just because their parents go out without them? Words fail me.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Frau Dr. Merkel: Nein
Ms. Sturgeon: Naw. Not on yer nelly.
Mrs. May: No means NO!0 -
Let the bright spark whose idea it was, buy the presents.0

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Maybe by the same logic the Dad should buy gifts for all the wives and girlfriends of the rest of the group as they are deprived of their menfolk for a night ?
Even for a Nick post this is even more ridiculous than usual :T

I would asked the reason for this request, it sounds absurd. Children get far too much at Christmas without strangers contributing to this over-indulgence.0

why would that ever enter your head i buy presents for those i care about money does not flow into my pocket i have to watch what i spend if others think buying for unknown people is a good idea let them do it not giving a pressy is not offensive to those of us who use a bit of common sense0

I regularly travel for work and as part of the trip I often end up visiting friends but stay in a hotel. In the scenario described there is no way I would consider purchasing a gift. If you were going to their house then yes. If you were meeting in a public place (meeting the kids I mean) then perhaps, depending on the strength of the relationship. If I were not seeing the kids then there is no need to purchase anything- if it were me in the position of receiving a gift for my kids I would be somewhat embarrassed!0

I value family life, I assume the children don't see much of their father because he is working all week and the children look forward to spending time with him at the weekend. Now he is spending that precious weekend with his workmates.
I didn't say children deserve presents every time their parents go out , I just think it is a nice thoughtful thing to do when work friends are intruding into what should be family time. There's no must and should in this at all but it is a lovely thing to do. I am also assuming the children in question aren't spoiled brats with piles of plastic tut surrounding them.Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20
