Money Moral Dilemma: Should we buy gifts for my mate's kids?

  • Yes this is just odd.
Simple answer: no, don't buy gifts, as (given the provided scenario), that would be bonkers.

    Eh ??? ...NO!
  • Why buy presents for young goats?
I would say the same if he had children, rather than kids.
  • Not enough information - as usual.

Has the person who suggested this, done it for the reason that the man who has kids, hasn't got much money and therefore this will be a treat for the kids who don't normally get much in the way of presents or treats?

If yes and if you can afford to buy present/s, then do it.

Quite a few men will meet up with old friends, for a boozy night out, when they can't really afford it. I know this is a fact as one member of my husband's family was allowed to go out once a week, to play darts and have a couple of drinks, even when they really couldn't afford to do it. His mum thought it was good of the wife to give him this money, even though they had two young kids. I did not agree with it as my kids have always come first.

So really, what's the harm. Means the kids get a treat or an extra present, which is no bad thing for any kid - they love presents!

Who knows, it might just be the best present they've had in a long time!

Bring a little extra joy to little ones.

I fully endorse your view on this.

Whoever came up with such a silly idea evidently has no concept of the value of money or even the reason for parting with it. If they want to give to people they don't even know, that's their affair, not yours but, more importantly, engaging in this kind of thing sets a dangerous trend.

You might have been close to your school-friends at one time, but a reunion like the one you're having certainly doesn't include the children of one of them. Having children was his/her choice and, as you say, you've never met them.

Stupid question- this is meant to be a 'money saving' website!
Why would you buy children you don't know / haven't met / not likely to meet a present?
The words fool, money and parted come to mind!

If you really really must buy a present then get a charity virtual gift- a dog lead, a pair of chickens, a soccer ball... whatever......at least that way it will benefit someone who needs it.

I seem to be alone. I think it's a lovely idea to buy gifts for the children.

You are taking their Dad away from family life for a few hours so give the children something to make them happy. It needn't be expensive but it's just a nice thing to do . Maybe waste a little less money on booze and spend it on something more worthwhile like something for the children to keep and enjoy.

Bit of a mad question, really. No need to get gifts for the children.

Unless not getting their parents so bladdered that they throw up over the kiddies the next day counts as "a gift."
