But by that logic, the whole group of friends who are meeting up will all need to buy gifts for each others children.
Surely the fact that they have decided to hold their reunion in the friends home-town so he doesn't need to travel is enough to reaffirm their friendship?

The question states that he is the only one who has children! As I said it's not a 'need', but in my opinion, in this case, it sounds a very thoughtful thing to do.
  • "Taking Dad away from family life for a few hours". Derrr, kids will be in bed. Definitely no presents.
  • seems odd to me if you arent meeting them.
now if i am going to somebodies with children that's a different matter, its a perfect excuse to purchase extra lego ( i have yet to present a small child with lego or duplo and not be immediately presented with the rest of their collection to create space stations / farms / houses / intergalactic battle blasters). which you invariably get to play with ;-)

You are taking their Dad away from family life for a few hours so give the children something to make them happy
Do they get a present every day daddy goes to work?

Am I reading this correctly "One of the party suggested we buy a 'visiting present' for his kids" - is this the father of the children, or one of the group?

In any case the answer would be no chance!

No, why would you? Its a grown up meet up and nothing to do with the kids. A secret Santa between the adults could be fun though.
  • Who are they going to say the present is from? Presumably the children haven't even met daddy's boozy mates.

    No, no and no again.
  • My take on would be that if he is the only one in the group to have a family and he has organised the group meet up then it might be a nice gesture.
  • No presents for his children, it is not necessary
