Turned down for a phone contract

I applied for a mobile phone contract this afternoon, and was turned down despite having a credit rating of 617 (4/5), having no credit problems or financial issues. I have asked the company to tell me why they did this, and have checked with my bank. However, even if this is a glitch, my bank tells me that this could remain on my credit report for six months, even though it is not my fault. What should I do?

  • What exactly appears on your files (not the scores)? Missed payments, CCJs, limited history?

    Check all three.

Yet another example of the 'score' being pretty irrelevant.

What is on your report? Is your address accurate? Have you moved recently? Do you have any other credit atm? Are you on the ER? Have you got any missed/late payments? They consider more than a score that they cannot see.

  • Thanks. I only used a free, basic, credit score company. Do you recommend a good company to use were I get a comprehensive report that won't cost much?
  • You need to check Noddle, Clearscore (for Equifax) and Experian.

Buy a phone outright and get a sim only plan from say Three or GiffGaff or another network which gives you good coverage.
  • I used Noddle, but it would seem I have to pay to get a full report.

DCFC 79, we own our phones and it would seem the deal we were offered had been a good deal. But I guess we will have to get pay as you go if I can't sort out the credit glitch.

I have owned the house I live in for 20 years, am on the ER, have never had a CCJ, have a credit card but it is way under the maximum, have never been overdrawn ...... they did ask my employment status which is "retired" - I took early retirement at age 58. I receive a private pension, but they did not ask about income. Could the fact that I retired early have gone against me?

My (free) noddles account allows me to view my entire report. Have another look, I'm sure yours will too.
  • Noddle gives you your Call Credit file for free.

But you need to check the others.

    Hi

I agree with zx81 that you should check your file held by all 3 of the main credit reference agencies. I just wanted to add that you can obtain a full statutory copy of your of your Experian file for £2, rather than paying for their subscription plan. Alternatively, you could subscribe and then cancel within 1 month for a free trial.

Sorry when you said contract I assumed you meant with a phone too.
No need for payg, go for a pay monthly sim.
