New goverment car tax rules from April 2017. Your thoughts?

    Got the DVLA VED reminder letter yesterday.

    My tax is NIL, clearly typed, but the wording seems to say that I "must tax the vehicle", or declare SORN, or say I sold the car.
    So, I "don't have to pay any", but I still have to go through the motion of "taxing it" online, using the reference number.

    I wonder whether they want to trip me up, because if I do nothing, then I haven't "taxed" the car technically, so they can fine me for not taxing it!

    I don't know for sure, but I remember a conversation a while back with a mate who has vintage vehicles. IIRC he said that although they are exempt and so cost nothing to tax, you still have to go through the motions.

    yes , and you would be suprised of the number of people even with historic cars/bikes (no mot needed) that fall in this trap

    Yep - as they have been since the historic vehicle £0 tax was introduced in the 1990s, just as for £0 low-CO2 vehicles, and just as £0 disabled-tax vehicles have always been.

    MOT is still checked at the time of taxing, where required, and insurance is still constantly checked. When paper discs existed, they were still required to be displayed.

    Basically, everything is exactly the same, it's just that no money changes hands. <shrug> Which is what you'd expect, really...

    Agree. It bugs me that I run a 51reg Yaris but pay £180 VED which is probably about 25% of the vehicle value. Emissions is a nonsense as it only does about 2k miles a year.

    Yep, but look at it like paying to access the road. Doesn't matter how many miles you do. You pay less 'tax' than many others because you've got quite an efficient car, and do far fewer miles than many others - via fuel.
    Try scaling that up a bit to lots of really nice, but low value cars, from 2006 that cost £510 (?) to tax every year!

    There are lots of cars out there that are worth less than the tax (mostly in the old luxobarge category). Tax based on value here doesn't seem to make much sense, it's probably more logical to base it on usage or emissions. Conveniently, both of them can be dealt with by tax on the fuel itself, that way it means you'd pay more to drive inefficiently or to drive a badly maintained car.

    Taxing petrol and diesel is directly proportional to the miles you do.

    One day, when most cars are electric, making your own bootleg electricity using solar panels must be considered the same as distilling your own gin. ;)

    Fair points, but it's not a tax to access the road. It's an emissions tax which I have to pay even though I'm hardly emitting. But whatever. Just having a moan.
