The printer that is still there/deleting is a corrupt entry that we need to get rid of before you can install it properly again.

If you double click the printer, are there any print jobs in the queue ?
If so, that would stop the printer being properly removed.

Dont worry about install disks, you dont need them, you need to get rid of this corrupted install then reinstalling it will be a doddle

Have cancelled the 1 o/s job (2011) and printer has gone from Control Panel (printers) and from list of Programms

Spooler seems to turn on automatically, when computer is restarted - on again now

Where are my recent downloads shown/stored (to stop me having to download the drivers each time I turn on/off (though as I say, the buttons are greyed out)

:) ok good, so before you start downloading drivers, lets get the computer to recognise that you are actually plugging in a printer ..

Now that the corrupt one has gone, what happens when you turn on the printer and connect the usb to the pc.
Do you still just get the beep, or do some windows pop up ?

nb the spooler will start automatically - that's fine

No problem, but please , if you want me to help you then you need to follow my thought processes as im not physically at the machine with you ..

Please forget about the driver for now - we will get to that once we have made windows start to recognise that a printer is being plugged in !!

When you are back, please let me know the answer to my question above :)

    Great news !
Yes thats what i was aiming for .. The old corrupt install was stopping windows detecting the plugged in device being recognised as new so it wouldnt try to go away and find the drivers.

If it hadnt found the drivers on its own then we could have moved to step 2 ..

Thanks for letting us know the outcome
