Oh and another thing to check is anything cane or wicker. We had larvae in all the wastepaper bins and baskets in the house too. And we seemed to be infested almost overnight! one minute no signs, next they were everywhere!

    Good luck

Anyone got any fool proof ways of ridding my house of moths? They're chomping on everything and I have no idea where they're coming from. I don't have a wardrobe, just a hanging rail and I'm sick of taking stuff down to find little holes. They seem to be in every room in the house...HELP!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

We seem to be getting a lot of moths in my wardrobes.
Never had to use anything before but I'm worried I end up with holey jumpers.
What's the best thing to use.I seem to remember my gran getting mothballs and I also remember them being very smelly and stinking the clothes out.I would'nt even know where to buy moth balls even if they are still available.
    Any advice.
    Thanks.

    Hi MRSTITTLEMOUSE,

There's an earlier thread with some ideas that should help so I've added your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

  • My mum has just shown me some bald patches in her living room carpets, mainly under the sofa, rug and around the edges.

She went to local hardware store to buy mothballs...and he suggested laundry borax, but didn't sell it and couldn't think of anywhere else that would sell it.

Anyway my question is, would she just be better getting a pest control company to come and fumigate the place, or is there anything she could do to eradicate them herself?

Thanks if anyone knows the answer

If it's carpet beetles she'll need to get fumigation in, not sure how you tell the difference.

  • No, it's definitely moths and not carpet beetles.

If the moths are in the carpet they are most definitely in the soft furnishings too - it isn't the moths that do the damage, it is the larvae from the eggs that they lay in any form of fabrics.
The only thing that I can think of is to strip the room and hoover all soft furnishings, skirtings and floorboards with an industrial strength vacuum cleaner every day, they are suseptible to cold and freezing fabrics for 24 hours will kill any larvae.
Ant powder can be used and so can fly killer but these are iffy on fabric
Failing that the only other option is to get a pest control company in.
Be aware that you can spread them through the whole house if you are not careful
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
