My daughter left school at 16 did 3 A levels ( had EMA during this period) left college at 18 but signed onto her HND course so there was no break in her education. She applied for EMA and will receive it for the two years that the course lasts. As I said I get child benefit and for Tax credit purposes she's still counted as a child. I know this does not apply to you but it's just to share with others too.
. I think it's the fact that she started this course when she is still 18 and although she's 19 soon the fact that it's a two year course without a break is why she'll get it for the two years. This could be where your problem lies. I just cannot believe that there would not be some support for you. What about the Learning Support Fund this is based on your household income, but I don't know if it covers beyond 18. Have you contacted your Welfare Team and asked for a consultation if there's anything due to you they will know. I might do a bit of ringing myself and let you know.

    Hi nad1611,

Can you tell me if rules in England and Scotland are different regarding EMA. My daughter just completed highers, scottish equivalent to a levels, she's 18 and has just gone straight to do an HND also. She's been informed that HNC and HND courses are not entitled to EMA but she is entitled to a bursary. May be a Scottish thing.

Also my Child Tax Credit was stopped as soon as she completed Highers and I was informed by Tax Credit office that because she was doing an HND I was not entitled to this now.

I can see there maybe a difference in EMA rules in UK but thought Tax Credit rules were all the same.

Could you let me know if I should still be getting Child Tax Credits.

    Thanks

That appears to be correct. I believe if the student is 18 (or under) when the course starts the fees will be paid for them. I think ctc stops when higher education begins, perhaps your daughter could get a part time job to help out and support herself?

Thanks thought I was correct. EMA and CTC are only for children aged up to 19 years doing non advanced Education i.e. A levels England, Highers Scotland. HNC and HND courses are classed as advanced Education.

I am one of the lucky ones whose daughter has had part time work since 16 and has always contributed to the house was just a bit confused how other poster was still getting CTC.

    Thanks for your input

Actually doing one a level and a part-time job honestly isn't too bad. I did a full-time job and full-time degree course for one year with a lot of planning and your workload should be a lot lower than mine.
Try call centres for evening and weekend shifts and a lot of stores are looking for extra evening and weekend staff between now and Christmas which would give you something for now and time to look for something more long term. Bowling centres, pubs, cinemas all employ staff on college friendly hours. I used to work as a manager of a bowling centre and we couldn't have survived without the student staff especially as most of them wanted extra hours during vacation time when we were busier-everybody won.
Sixteen hours a week will qualify you for working tax credit and should really improve your income without impacting too much on your study time.
You might even be able to save something towards your uni expenses next year !

As a point of interest, did you know that if a 16 year old leaves school and has a break from education before going to college, the ema won't be payable - to qualify the transition from school to college must be unbroken.

I am not sure if things are different for EMA in Scotland. All I can say is that I am in receipt of child benefit and child tax credit for the period of the 2 year course. Hers is an Btec HND course too. I think it depends which course she is on. I must say that the first time I asked child benefit they said no, so I rang again just to be sure and the next advisor said yes as long as it was straight on from the A levels she'd donne which it was. I have to phone them on her birthday ( when she'll be 19) to confirm she has continued with her course. So I would definetly check again if I were you. Hope this helps.

    Hi valvac.
As you can read from my previous thread your comment definetly does not apply in England because my daughter is getting EMA, she applied in August and has been receiving it now for 3 weeks so as said previously worth checking out as with CTC and Child Benefit!
