Best place to buy a used BMW?

Options
I am planning to buy a used BMW X3 (4-5 years old, looking to spend round 15k) ASAP and appreciate if someone can suggest which is the best reliable place to buy? I am based in Guildford and can travel upto 50-60 miles.

Thanks in Advance

On a car as complex as an X3, i'd consider using a main dealer and getting an approved used car. You might pay a bit more, but you'll pretty much have a manufacturer quality warranty that can be extended.

    I agree totally.

OP - that's the only answer you need.

But I'd suggest searching the BMW AUC on-line and consider cars further afield too.

The BMW warranty is honoured at every BMW dealership in Europe, so it doesn't really matter where you buy the car.

The right place to buy is from whoever is selling the car you want, at the price you want, with the backup you want.

Getting hung up on only wanting to travel a short distance (yes, 50 miles is a short distance) is a sure-fire way of crossing an awful lot of potential good deals off your list. It's a car. You cannot get a more mobile purchase than that...
  • Buy from main dealer you have more rights, expensive yes but also piece of mind, these cars are very complex

Don't you have the same rights what ever dealer/trader you buy from?

It's the seller adhering to the law is what you mean.

What extra "rights" are these, as opposed to buying from any other dealer?

Buying any 'approved' used car from a main dealer means you have at least 1 year AUC warranty. This type of warranty is actually worth the paper its written on. On a car as complex as a BMW, any fault found will be replaced by the main dealer using new, genuine parts - usually without fuss.
Any 'approved' used car from a main dealer would also be prepared for the customer, usually meaning they'll give the car a full check and carry out any service items or recalls.

What has a warranty got to do with your legal rights?

If you're buying a high value, complex car like a BMW you want piece of mind, so buying from a main dealer for their AUC warranty is worth it.

Are you sure he doesn't want 'peace' of mind?

Nothing. The point is that things will usually be fixed under the AUC warranty "without fuss".

Countless posts on here demonstrate that this often does not apply when you try to enforce your legal rights with a used car dealer.
