Forget the dress size for a minute but how over the weight / height range are you? (I don't want to know how much you weigh just how many lbs you'd like to lose ... To give you some idea I've lost 1st 1lb in about 8 weeks without exercising - It's only last week that I've started swimming but already I can see the benefits, on & off the scales)

I had ivf due to secondary infertility, I had to be a healthy bmi to be able to go ahead with it even though we were self funding.

I was thankfully prepared as we saved and ate all my meals of a side plate, had the same. dinners just off a slide plate.

I also walked my dogs on the three walks rather than letting my hubby do it.

I didn't and don't even now weigh myself but knew as I was fitting into a size 12 easily rather than a tight size 14 I'd done it.

Good luck, I hope your dream comes true xx

  • I checked on NHS bum calculator categorising me as obese as 36 BMi. I'm just under 5ft and weigh about 13st I think but nhs site says I should weigh between 6st.8lms to 8st.12 as deemed @heslthy weight", that's bit much I think!

I lost 2 stone just before June this year but put back on as got lazy, bad excuse I know, I was doing insanity interval training. It was effective but after trip to shop I didn't fit into smaller size and so felt resentful then lazy as insanity is so hard. I didn't follow any diet, lots of avocado on rye, salads with protein post workouts. didnt have rubbish in home, drank herbal teas, 2l water a day, I was feeling up beat but then that shopping trip really set me back, bygones. I like the side plate idea, bit scared to do slimming world or WW as always felt restricted when I did in past and going out was nightmare for me. I'll try again, just need to get in habit of exercising after work, a friend once told me if you do same thing 3 days in row it becomes habit-Recently only lasted 2 days(!), will try again and think of bigger picture

    Thanks so much for listening

I had a baby at a size 18 (and age 40). Plenty of us 'larger' ladies have children quite happily, I wouldn't say that my size made it more of a struggle. But I didn't have any blood pressure issues to complicate matters, just age ...

This is a great example of how thinner does not always equal healthier.

If you eat the wrong foods, cutting down the portions so that you're not filling up will probably give you a weight loss, but are you any healthier? Are you getting the nutrients you need?

If you're eating healthy foods most of the time (everybody should have a treat or something they fancy on occasion) then there's absolutely no reason why you should be eating tiny amounts off a side plate.

(OP, start doing pelvic floor exercises now if you don't already. You won't regret it!)

I generally eat healthy but would pile too much food on a plate as generally try and fill a plate, using the side plate meant I still ate as normal just had better portion control.

Each to their own, I just found this method easy for me not to pile up my plate.

You have to remember your own health directly effects that of your unborn child, so if you are unhealthy your child isn't getting the best possible start, this is something you could change.

When baby is here and growing up etc they will share your eating and activity habits, its harsh, but do you want to make your child obese like yourself? Or do you want to change your life and have children with healthy balanced diets?

You'd have been better just having a bit less of the calorific stuff and filing the space on the plate with lean protein and green or leafy veg. How did you get anywhere near your 5 (or more) a day using only a side plate!

(I'm not trying to preach, I'm guilty of eating more than needed pretty often myself, but the idea that you should just eat much less of the same food in order to lose weight before a pregnancy is just not a good or healthy one for the OP to try.)
  • Oh gwylim-your words have hit me 😐, never really though too much about it before till you said it. I really want to eat better even more now, OH is vegetarian but will be sure to eat more fruit n veg, leafy greens especially. I bought folic tablets earlier too. Will start to take so it's a reminder too of bigger picture
