Your friend is basically a liberty taker.

If I meet a mate for a dinner and there's a BOGOF deal of some sort then I thought it was common practice that you split the deal... Not that one of you eats free while the other pays.

If it was me I would have made it quite clear when they pulled that stunt what I thought of them.

    Cheeky beggar!

Surely he wouldn't have been able to use his coupon without another meal bring bought!

    Some friend.

Tight as a crab's posterior. Seems to me he picked the venue with the intention of making you drive 28 miles out of your way so his voucher would become valid when you paid for your meal.

Needs a wide berth or a quick kick in the beanbag.

Is your friend's name Titus R. Soles?
  • Oh my word, I never expected so many replies to this thread. Thank you all so much.

I am absolutely going to insist on him allowing me to choose the restaurant next time and will ensure I have a coupon. (For those who asked, no it wasn't something he'd saved up points for: the restaurant sends you a free meal coupon on your birthday and it can be used any time - it wasn't his birthday when we went out).

I'll let him know in advance that I want my turn at getting a freebie and if he gets cheesed off at having to pay for himself I will send him a link to this thread!

Thanks again to all that replied.

If he didn't offer, why didn't you suggest splitting the cost at the time - telling him that that's what usually happens?

Because I know he would have turned me down flat. He would probably have said that it's 'his birthday' coupon, or some such selfish argument. If someone doesn't offer to split the bill they're not likely to change their mind just because I've explained that it's 'the done thing'. Sad but true.

Well, if that's the case, I don't think I would have been having a meal with him in any case!

So he didn't mention before that he was planning on using his coupon for a free meal? And he didn't say anything along the line of 'how about I use my coupon this time, but next, we go near you and you use your coupon'?

Is it the first time you've been out to eat together? How long have you been friend?

Please come and let us know what his reaction is when you inform him you intend to do the same. I suspect most likely that he will find an excuse why he can't make it.
