Thrifty friend dines for free while I pay

You could of course have asked for separate bills - I imaginethat he would then have been unable to use his coupon!
I agree that it was not on - he was only able to get the free meal becuase you were there buying a full price one, so it is not the same as a situation where you have a voucher for money off, or where you are paying with a coupon rather than with cash. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Scenarios like this depend on the type of voucher. If I had, say, a £20 Tesco voucher that i'd got by carefully saving my points for six months then I wouldn't feel bad about using it to pay for just my own portion of the meal. However, if it wa something I'd clipped out the newspaper then I would be happy to share the saving with the whole table.0

They really are not much of a friend to be honest with you and if I were you in your shoes they would soon be told this.0

That's not being thrifty - that's taking advantage of you

You just need to be one step ahead and download your coupon too, then at the end of the meal, INSIST it is his turn to pay the full price, pointing out he did the same thing last time!
There is thrifty, then there is taking the p*ss!!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I agree with you OP. The way I have read it, is that he wouldn't have been able to use his voucher without you paying for your meal, so he was dependent on you being there.
Even if he could have turned up and just got his free meal on his own, it is still tight, in my opinion.
I agree that if it was something he had saved points for etc, and possibly could have used them for something else, then it is slightly different. But, if I was in that scenario, I would use them for something different, so as to avoid a situation like this. I imagine most people would. If I go out with friends and we have vouchers etc, we always split the remainder. Sometimes I bring the vouchers, sometimes they do. It's all part of an equal friendship.0 -
He would quickly be off my list of friends!
Producing a coupon without even discussing it with you beforehand is taking advantage of you, not something a friend would ever consider doing!!0 -
What did you have to eat?I'm a greenfield sight for sore eyes, and sore eyes are just needing the light, the shapes, and the shadows of the space we share, before it splits into Thin Air.0

I'd have pointed out there and then and only paid for half of my meal... Cheeky sod!0
