Not much help now, but I've held back on opening a current account with them because I remember their attitude to security from a few years ago (apparently 4 now!).

This doesn't appear to have anything to do with Tesco Bank.

The R4 interview with Bernie Higgins (CEO of Tesco Bank) is on the BBC site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37891742 Seems to be saying that online transactions have been suspended for all customers. There's account access but whether he really means all online transacrions (including new BACS) or just online debit card transactions isn't too clear in the interview.

Just tested my and Mrs R's accounts (2 each) and can't use debit card transfers on any of them even though just one had an apparent attempted fraud.

Matt of MSE, your article says "So far there's no suggestion that Tesco Bank credit card accounts or savings accounts have been hacked into - the issue appears to only be affecting current accounts." and "My current account has been hacked - what happens next?".

There's no suggestion whatsoever that any current accounts have been hacked into either so your article is misleading. It's more likely that access has been gained to a database of the debit card details somewhere, possibly a third party as Tesco have claimed, not individual accounts. Misinformation just increases confusion.

Balance and available balance are both exactly £3000. I am unable to move any money using faster payments to any of my other accounts.
Faster payments is working fine for me. I have made multiple payments in the last half hour from an account that had money stolen. They all went through without any problem.

What is a debit card transfer?

The R4 interview with Bernie Higgins (CEO of Tesco Bank) is on the BBC site
    It's Benny Higgins
  • Although I got the "identified suspicious activity on your account" text yesterday no money has been "stolen" from our accounts. We have never used the cards. In the log in process I had to use one time access codes sent by phone which is unusual. When I opened the accounts I had telephone alerts set up on the current accounts for a maximum of £3001 and minimum of £2999 so that I would know immediately if a fraudulent transaction had taken place and it it is also handy to know when to skim the interest because Tesco pays the interest corresponding to the date as the account was opened.

Out of interest has anyone managed to discuss the prospect of a refund of call charges with Tesco?

I was following their instructions to call them as they needed to speak to me urgently. My online account shows I spent 170 minutes connected to their number yesterday. This shows as a cost of £0.00 online because it is part of my November inclusive minutes. However based on my normal usage I will go over my inclusive minutes by the end of this month. The additional minutes will be charged at 45p/minute. I won't actually go over by 170 minutes but if I did the cost would be approx £75!

I wondered this myself, but haven't raised it but will be writing to Tesco in due course.

I suggest that a generic compensation amount should be paid. A higher amount to all customers who have had money taken from their account, a lower amount to those who got the initial fraud message but whose accounts didn't have money taken from them. Apart from call charges, there is waste of time involved plus worry/concern caused by the initial poor handling.
  • Just transferred monies online to an external account of mine & all working fine. Money landed at other account within minutes so appears to be working fine?

Given that they have now frozen online payments to retailers from current account debit cards but not cash withdrawals, chip & pin transactions, nor online banking transfers, it is most likely 'Card not present' (CNP) fraud:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Card_not_present_transaction
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_card_fraud#Card_not_present_transaction

It could also be that the debit cards linked to the affected current accounts are not protected by Tesco Bank Secure (aka 'Verified by Visa' & 'MasterCard SecureCode'), unless this security layer was bypassed in the hack.
