Back again after reading all your comments on my post.
To answer some of your questions our house is worth about £130k and we have a £40k mortgage.
Our house in France isn't selling as it isn't near any major towns, the French do not want to live in the countryside and UK and other foreign buyers have dried up. We have bought and sold 4 other houses during our working life in France and only want the cost of building our current house back.
some of you say there may be a small percentage of bad renters, well 6 out of 7 near us are bad, not a small percentage.
The ones who were evicted are now round the corner in a caravan on some waste ground. A neighbour asked the council to arrange the removal of their possessions/rubbish which still blocks the pavement but they want HIM to pay them to do it.

Suggest that a different neighbour reports the rubbish as a fly tip. They might investigate who left it and charge them.

OP, from what you've said I don't think you're prejudice, BUT having just read through the whole thread it would seem a fair few people here are!
I have just spent the day with my daughter & her family who last weekend moved into a very nice, privately rented 4 bed detached, and all I can say is thank God for that!! They were virtually driven from their previous rental by owner occupiers who were extremely prejudiced against those that rent, they were accused by one neighbour of being very noisy, which they certainly weren't, but he still kept up a stream of complaints to the LA, who eventually ignored him, the self appointed "traffic warden" was never happy no matter where my daughter parked, there are no restrictions but tried to impose some, when he got nowhere with the LA he not only keyed her car but also ripped off the wipers - not just the blades either! another decided to push up her water bills by attaching a hose to the outside tap, which is at the front of the house, and running it for a few hours a day  she was finally filmed by another neighbour while my daughter & son in law were at work! another told them on the day they moved in that "we don't like people renting around here any more than we like the f**king foreigners!!! Some really nice types there then! My daughter left the house in better condition that when they moved in, absolutely spotless & gardens tidy etc. but then she was brought up to look after her "home" .
These "lovely" neighbours have well and truly messed things up for themselves and will find that in a week or so when my daughters tenancy ends, that they have upset the LA and landlord so much with their constant groundless complaints, that it will no longer be rented out, it won't be sold either, it will be used by the landlord to house a few of his employees from the local Indian restaurant -they'll love that, the racist bigots! :rotfl:

Well I'm sorry, but it seems the overall consensus on this thread would prefer to live next door to renters as otherwise you are a prejudiced bigot, god help us all.

If I had to choose as a matter of life or death I'd choose the tenant. How do you like them apples?

Where does your little game of prejudice end?
    Yes, of course you would;)

I had some sympathy with you when you started in this thread Ashingtonian, as it appeared that some people didn't seem to want to answer your question as to whether they would want to live next to buyers or renters, until you said that............('yes of COURSE you would!') Pixie answered with 'I'd choose a tenant' and you refused to believe her, yet when someone said they would choose a buyer, you decided to say 'we have a winner!' because it was the answer you wanted to hear.

FWIW, the reason (IMO) that people haven't been answering properly, is because they can't, because they really don't know. I have lived next to the loveliest renters, and the most dreadful homeowners.

Some people have already stated above that homeowners can be a nightmare, as they can build huge fences, plant huge trees, chop established trees because they don't like the leaves on their car, make lots of noise from internal and external renovations, and build extensions that block the light etc, and they are more difficult to get rid of, and will say 'my house, I will do what I like!'

As some have said, the private renters CAN be more of a pain (but not always,) than social housing tenants. Private let people are usually only there for a little while, and so don't always care about the property or the neighbourhood.

Would I rather live next to renters or owners? There are good and bad in both, so I have no answer for you.

We are all influenced by our life experiences and many of us tend to think that what we see around us is the norm, even if logic tells us it must be otherwise.

Anyone calling themselves 'Ashingtonian' probably hails from Ashington. There are 3 Ashingtons in Britain; the largest being a place where there have been social problems ever since the mines closed in the 80s. For example:

    http://www.northumberland.gov.uk/WAMDocuments/91C5FC42-9D8E-46F2-9552-0D1F2AB12842_2_0.pdf?nccredirect=1

There's also Ashington village in West Sussex and an even smaller Ashington in Somerset.

The latter two are not noted for social problems.

Sounds like you should know that the property market doesn't work like that. "What you want" is irrelevant. It's worth what somebody will pay for it - and if you price it realistically, it WILL sell.

In the U.K. that's true in France it's quite a different set up. Realistic can and does take years, of course if it were offered for 1 euro it would sell, probably still to a foreign person if it is rural.

Choosing one over another shows prejudice. The overall consensus, which you wouldn't accept, was that most people don't have a preference.

Who would you choose as a neigbour. Someone who judges you based on whether you rent or own or someone judging you based on your actions and behavior?

At least if a tenant is a nightmare, they're more likely to be gone fairly soon I suppose!

The flip side of that is if you get nice tenants they may also be gone soon! We got on quite well with our old neighbours, they were worried when we said we were moving because they didn't know who they were going to get. The tenant before us had noisy dogs.

I can't imagine they're too happy with the new tenants because they never cut their part of the front garden. On another thread a while ago though everyone seemed to think you were prejudiced for wanting to live next to someone who cut their grass!

Sounds like a nightmare to be fair, as I have stated there are bad owners as well as bad renters, my point all along has been on the balance of probability you're more likely to have trouble with renters (especially private ones). If this view is classed as being bigoted then so be it.
