Laptop very slow

I know you are advising me to remove Norton Security but I am reluctant to do this. At times when I have had some security issues. I have contacted them and they have resolved it by using remote control to do so
Also I bought a 5 package and so I have it on my phone and my tablet. Again I have paid about £30 - £40 to buy it.
For now the pages are opening up reasonably quickly. The newspapers are taking time to open up a new page and it wont scroll up until it stops loading completely.
I do appreciate all your suggestions Thank you Sue0 -
Whilst you could improve things by scrapping Norton, it probably won't give you a hugely-noticeable improvement.
Norton isn't the nightmare bloatware it used to be, but there are better packages out there.0 -
The laptop is 4 years old and I have had this problem for some considerable time now Sue
I have used SuperAntiSpyware which turned up 1847 issues I think mainly cookies Have removed them so will see if it makes any difference Sue
unnecessary software is how these problems start, uninstall it, it won't make a difference.
What else have you installed? Anything that scans or blocks access to sites can cause slow page loading. newspaper sites (which?) are full of ads/scripts/video's - firefox shows waiting/transferring data from https://www.x on the bottom left of the browser window, (is it getting stuck?), it also has an array of settings that can affect usability/speed/page loading/scrolling

Same problem 2 years ago? If you ever want to get to the bottom of it, a more brutal approach is required
Using your other devices, prove it is your machine rather than your ISP
There is a very easy way to find out if it's anything to do with Norton.., it starts with a U, Symantec's remote control facility isn't helping you now
disable all firefox plugins and extensions, restart firefox and test the news site. test the same site in chrome and internet explorer
follow the browser(and browser profile) reinstallation procedure, restart and test
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer
or do it properly, backup then

Not seen much in terms of reliable advice or diagnosis.
Sue what is the laptop make / model etc? Do you use it for anything other than web browsing, eg you you use Office type programs and are they slow.?
Inane ramblings aside -
Norton is a horrible product, it hooks its tendrils into all parts of your computer and is programmed in a very clunky way that always prioritises its-self over anything else that you happen to be trying to do with your machine.
I have never come across a machine that is running well that has anything norton installed.
Remove this first. Then install a free and much better AV such as bitdefender.
As malwarebytes has picked up and removed some threats, its best to tidy up using ADW cleaner.
Get it here, its free :- https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/
Next, can you look in task manager please and see how much CPU is being used, and on what ..
Also, how much free space do you have on your main drive ?0 -
Currently I am going through the suggestions I have been advised to try
Getting rid of the cookies seemed to have helped
I am carrying out a disk cleanup at the moment.
When I am trying to read newspaper as suggested by someone when I look at the bottom left of screen there is a lot of things looks like possibly scanning
Using my tablet so I can see what is happening on the laptop screen
Currently I have clicked and it says cleaning up drive but nothing happening
Not sure how long this should take so will leave it and see what happens
Thanks Sue0 -
I am going to switch my desktop on and see how it is performing Will post back later Sue0
-
I was still struggling and used the remote assistance from Norton
Seems to be running better at the moment so will see how it goes
Once again thanks for all the advice over the past few days

Also you may have too many unnecessary programs running in the background. This startup manager is good http://iobit-startup-manager.software.informer.com/0

No no no no no no.
You dont install more rubbish to slow down your machine to find out what is slowing down your machine !!!
Task manager and msconfig are built into windows and do the same thing.
It is this behaviour (ie my computer is slow, i know , ill download this registry booster etc) that has got the OP into this state in the first place.
There is a simple fix that i guarentee will work (so long as the issue is not hardware related)
1 uninstall Norton and any other speed booster, virus killer etc on the machine
Be brutal with this, if you dont know for sure what it is and actively use it, then uninstall it
2 run malwarebytes
3 run adw cleaner
4 Install Bitdefender
5 Enjoy a computer that runs like the day it was bought.
Its as simple as that, you have your answer, its up to you if you do it, or cling on to the ways that have left you having to come to this forum for help.0 -

I suppose it's personal choice. I know you think you're the king of techie stuff but everyone has a right to offer advice. The Iobit startup manager is very effective when some programs or utilities even after requesting they do not start up will countermand that without you knowing and to keep on calling up msconfig every day is cumbersome to say the least. The 'slowing down' is negligible, you're talking about nanoseconds.0
