based on which premise is that then ? crap guess or do you know it could possibly windows 7 and norton, or could it be DNS or hey it could be wet finger in air, at least try to help what is causing slowness not general finger pointing at symantec.
the laptop could be an 8086 ....

Could be overheating, svchost thrashing on an update, a fart in the wind, neighbour stealing the wifi who knows but you have to start somewhere. AV solutions cause a lot of slow downs, especially nukems insecurity, a product I've come to despise over the years.

Thanks for replies I am just doing the Malware bytes scan at the moment
I am using Firefox but yesterday tried Chrome yesterday without any success
Today I am finding that even my tablet is slow to load up but not as slow as the Laptop.
I have not tried my Desktop which I very rarely use I spoke to Talk Talk about a week ago. They confirmed that the speed was very slow. They got me to switch off the Modem and switch it back on . Speed prior to this was 3.4 After it was 5.6 They said this was within normal limits for my area.
I am not too concerned at the rate but rather that it hangs or tells me it is not responding.. I will report back when this scan is complete
    Many thanks Sue

Thanks for letting us know this, have TT asked you to try a traceroute and ping test ?

Could you try this and post the results here, if you still are not sure what to do post back and I'll furnish you with more detailed instructions.

Has it been trying to do the upgrade to Win 10 - this can cause what you are experiencing and could also be the case for your tablet if that also runs on Windows.

Norton's is notorious for being resource hungry whereas free av's like Avast and BitDefender are just as good but don't slow things down as much.
  • Good advice has been given, I also advise uninstalling Norton & Trusteer, also download and run Advanced system care (free) and keep it on your system and run it every time the little icon loses it's smile. Also don't be tempted to download Win 10 on an older machine as you will be inviting all sorts of trouble.

Running Superantispy speeds up my old laptop.

When did the OP mention Trusteer hey let's all uninstall Norton from her Tablet, and router, then disable everything that may or may not be on her laptop or mainly unused desktop or may be on her TV,fridge freezer or all IoT devices within wireless range of her router. Not seen much in terms of reliable advice or diagnosis.
Sue what is the laptop make / model etc? Do you use it for anything other than web browsing, eg you you use Office type programs and are they slow.?

Sorry for not getting back sooner today Have been out most of the day and busy here. I was going to download Windows 10 and had in fact started to way back> I read that a lot of people were having problems so did not complete. I use my laptop mostly for browsing the internet and shopping etc. I do write some letters etc on it but not much else Maybe I should delete all the old letters etc I also store photo's on it > It is an HP and is now 3 1/2 years old The battery does not hold the charge so have to use it plugged in. I am wondering if it would be worth my while asking the chap who deals with any problems I have had in the past with virus> Not needed to use him since I got this laptop. It was a gift for my 70th birthday from my Son and Daughter.
I spoke to TT and the got me to switch off my modem They then reconnected it again remotely. They got me to do the PING test and the speed came up as 5.6 I think on download but 0.7 on uploading I am not really using it for this. TT said this speed was within normal limits for this region.
When I am trying to read the papers or doing my shopping it is still hanging and taking ages to clear before I can scroll.
I am very grateful for all the suggestions. I will read them again tomorrow as it is now 12 20am I will look at trying some of the other suggestions made. Many thanks again

Hi Sue, firstly I'd go along with the "remove Norton" suggestion.I know plenty of people who have tried it and found it slowed everything right down. I used to find Avira good for the virus checking duties and Ccleaner is an excellent little program for housekeeping, free download.
I say used to as I now use Linux Ubuntu on my PC.It was old and ailing but £6 and Ubuntu on a USB stick from Ebay has given it a new lease of life. There are a few programs it doesn't have that you can get on Windows but if you just want to read the papers, browse the internet etc it's a lot lighter than Windows and will possibly run a lot better on an older or lower spec machine. I managed to instal it in minutes and I'm pretty much a Tech numpty,I'm sure you can find help if you're not confident enough on your own. If you get it on a USB stick there's no need to even instal it on your computer.I tried it that way before liking it and installing, which takes minutes.
