For the past week I have had a very unseasonable spring cold......... I do find I more often than not get a cold (or something) when I relax. Its as though while I am stressed and on the go I don't notice it - but then once I relax it grabs a hold.

So maybe this last 10 days of actually biting the bullet and coming to terms with my financial issues and putting a plan of action into being has released the stress in me - hence the cold!

But every down has its up ............ I've felt too wretched to go to the shops - so a saving on fuel and coffee and anything else I might have bought.

Well - good news! I think I mentioned in a previous post that over a couple of years I had occasionally lent my son money (usually to help him with rent) and that he always tries to repay, although due to his work I know it can't be much and it can't be often. However, I have always had the confidence that I knew he would at least try.

So today he repaid $200 which I immediately put on my credit card.

An amazing feeling to think that when I pay next I will be saying $11,000+ owing, instead of saying nearly $13,000. I know my next payment will only make it go just under $12,000 but it is the sound of saying eleven something that makes a difference.

I'm determined to be debt free!

    October 20 - Owe $12,500,
    October 27 - $12,400
    November 2, Paid $200 - Balance $12,200
    November 4, Paid $200 - Balance $12,000
  • That's brilliant, it's nice your son paid it back.

Yes - I am proud of my son. Its nice knowing that as short of cash as he is, he does understand what a pressure it puts on me when he has to borrow, and when he does get a job and has paid his immediate expenses, it is good to know that he thinks of me next. He still owes more, but I know I can rely on him paying it as he gets it even though it will be slow.

But its just something else to boost me.

Do home my ramblings are not 'off target'. Being new here I am not sure what is really protocol, so please advise if I ramble on.

Personally I like it when others talk about their lives. We can't be all pounds, shillings and pence. Or whatever the Aussie version is :)

Seasidegal - I'm an English girl living in Australia - with husband, children and grandchildren so likely to remain :-( - so talking in pounds, shillings and pence is great. Makes me feel at home!

Thanks Aazzzaa for your ongoing support.

What this forum has actually done for me is to show how careless I have been in the past to let things get to the level they did as well as how much I stuck my head in the sand. Yes, some of the debts would have happened anyway. I had a few medical expenses that were unforseen, I lent my son money on a couple of occasions for his rent and also some medical expenses he had.

I realise though that what I continued to do was to NOT monitor my shopping. I didn't make a list of what I needed and bought what I thought and in many cases what caught my eye. My children actually laughed at me because they would come home and visit and find for example - 12 tins of tomatoes but no corn or peas, 30 rolls of toilet paper but just the last of a rolled up tube of toothpaste. It was doubly funny or should I say pathetic because of the job I had held and which I was good at - accounting.

The credit card was just supposed to be a standby. We used our wages to pay off our mortgage and our bills. But it was so easy when I saw something to think 'I will just get this and transfer the money from savings to credit when I get paid', but of course I didn't and then when the monthly interest hit - well enough said and up and up it crept and I kept saying - next month.

I didn't buy things like clothes, jewellery, makeup etc. and I don't have many nick nacks and certainly don't have lots of mod cons . But I would buy magazines, and books and books and books. Also admit to going overboard for my grandchildren at Christmas and Birthdays - something that has stopped this year - plus other things that I just didn't think properly about.

What made me come to my senses and made me admit I had to face things was the fact that my credit card had almost reached it's AD13,000 limit and I suddenly thought - the idea of having a card is for emergencies. Now if there is an emergency how do I deal with it, given that I have a high monthly payment to make on this. So that was it. Head out of the sand. Shopping lists made etc and a determination to become debt free.
