prescriptions

Options
My daughter is a second year student and has had yet another flair up of her psioriasis (sorry bad spelling). So off she went to the doctors who gave her a prescription with four items on. What we didnt realise was that because she is now 19 , even though she is a full time student she has to pay for prescriptions so this is over £25 worth.

We pay for a basic cover for her with Healthshield mainly so her dental check ups are paid for. I did wonder about upping the cover but the top level is nearly £42.90 a month, an extra £420.60 a year and this only covers her for 5 prescriptions. Obviously not worth the extra money.

I also wondered about annual prescription passes - do they still exist? I vaguely seem to remember they depended on how many items you were likely to need in a year.

One of the items was T Gel for her scalp so she is going to look around and try and find a supermarket etc that sells it cheaper than prescription. Also, I know you are not supposed to do this but her BFs mum is a lifelong sufferer and has a full selection of bath lotions, skin emolluents etc so she is going to see if any of these match what she has been prescribed.

I think that the last time she had a presciption she didnt realise and just ticked the box, I think she must have been only slightly over the age limit. So she is very worried about this as well.

Is your daughter eligible for help with health costs?

If not, then yes, you can still get annual/ quarterly passes, which work out excellent value if you need many medications x

my DH has prescriptions totalling over £30 a time, so he buys a 3 month pre pay prescription (PPP) for around £35. He then gets one repeat prescription at the beginning, one in the middle and one right at the end. He then waits until the day he runs out of tablets before renewing his PPP.

Can't locate the form, but I have found this.

    Free Prescriptions
    About the Service

Students aged 19 and over (from any country) are not automatically entitled to free prescriptions. Each person must complete form HC1 annually. These are available from the Health Centres, Helpzones and many GP surgeries.

  • we buy the 3 monthly repeat script for £35 once a year, for those three months we reorder everything my husband uses every three weeks and always have enough in back up, to last almost a year then. our dr / receptionist has only questioned our frequency of requests once, when we admitted what we were doing, they agreed it was an excellent idea.

Yes, just trying to figure out this HC1 form.

The lady I rang said she would need to send a photocopy of her student loan thing which is Ok because I can scan it in and email it to her to print off. But also wage slips from her part time job. This one might be tricky because I know she gets paid in cash each week but I've not seen a wage slip ever. Also because its bar work she has obviously been doing extra hours over the summer but these have now been curtailed. I am assuming she has had a P60 for the last tax year, wonder if that is any good?

Worth filling in the form anyway just to see.

I also found out that the annual certificate was £98.70 and its payable over 10 monthly direct debits so if she cant get free prescriptions I think this might be the route to go down anyway.

And the lady said that if she paid for any precscriptions while she was waiting for forms to be evaluated to make sure she got a SP57 receipt from the chemist so the cost can be climed back.

    Very complicated isnt it -

We have full cover from Healthshield but this only covers 5 prescriptions a year and I think we must now be near the limit for this year so I think we might also need to do something like this.

  • they are really excellent value for money, our dr added a medicated shampoo to his last after he used a new hairgel which gave him a dry scalp, and an all over body moisturiser, which we go through bucket loads of as a family,

he uses three differnt tablets each day on top so its worth it for all money saved.
