Am I buying a used sofa?

I am looking to order a new sofa from Next via their website.

Their terms are "If you do change your mind you have the right to cancel your order after you have received it." (within 14 days). I also checked with them via telephone and they said this still counted for sofas, even if I have unwrapped it and have it in my home for 14 days.

The sofa I am interested usually takes 8 weeks to deliver, but at the moment it is available with '4 day delivery'. Could this be with a sofa that might have already been used and returned by someone else as part of the cooling off T&C?

Maybe, but next has huge warehouses so they will have stock of the most popular items.


Going by your thinking are you going to now worry every time you buy a pair of trousers, or a new top off the internet because there is a good chance they have been returned too. In fact 99% of internet purchases are open to the same problem.

That is a good point regarding clothing. I will now be thinking of this when I buy anything else online!

Though obviously a sofa is a much bigger purchase and more hassle to return if I do find any defects, so just wanting to get this clarified up front.

Not just online - a lot of brick and mortar retailers offer returns within a certain time frame.

If it puts your mind at ease, I work for a furniture company who sells online and offers returns... we find most of the time they don't come back to us in perfect condition (due to being unwrapped from their original packaging and not repackaged to the same standard) so we very rarely put them back to good stock, in fact we usually put them on ebay.

Doesnt really help TBH, you can go in most shops and try clothes on for fit, does that make them second hand in peoples eyes, no!

Also, given the generous returns policy - or at least exchange policy - of most retailers, there's no guarantee the clothes on the rack are new and that they haven't been in someone else's home for 27 days.
