Fluids at airport security

This has probably been asked but I just want to clarify because I'm sure there is still confusion. What do they class as fluids. Ok, the obvious things like drinks, perfume ect. But what about mascara, lipstick, Vaseline. I'm only taking hand luggage away, so all of these things will have to go through security. Do I have to put them in my clear bag? I personally wouldn't class lipstick as liquid, but what's the official definition? Any other items that don't seem obvious?

If the lippy is a stick then it's not. If it's a tube where you apply with a wand it is. Mine got turfed out at security. Same as gels so stick the Vaseline and mascara in the bag as well.

Hi sorry not sure on lipstick, I use lip gloss so that is regarded as liquid and toothpaste is liquid. If you are struggling to get everything in the wee plastic bag if there is a Boots shop after security you can buy some items there.

There's no hard and fast rule though

I had a stick deodorant allowed through at LBA on Thursday morning - they even asked to look at it.
Thursday evening, I got the same request to look at it at BHD and it was denied and confiscated.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

There's a list on Gov.uk under 'hand luggage restrictions'.

It includes mascara, I'd guess that it also included Vaseline.

Any liquids/gels will have to go into your clear bag.

I take stick deodorant but it goes in my plastic bag - it's less than 100ml.

If in doubt it is a liquid. Even shoe polish (the sort that seems solid to me) is classified as a liquid.

Lipstick, depends where you're flying through, some airports will let it through as a solid, others won't,

Easiest thing to do is, if in doubt put in in your clear bag, they're not going to tell you off for putting things in there that shouldn't but they can get pretty stroppy if you don't put things in there that should.

You should be ok with lipstick, but if you have room put it in the clear bag anyway as some airports are fussy with solid stick type cosmetics

Toothpaste, vaseline, mascara are all classed as liquids.

Hi, most airports will let it through if you place the makeup in the plastic bag provided. I usually take my own 20x20cm and must be resealable, I buy food bags with a zipper from Sainsburys.

    According to LBA website:

    Liquids include:

    • Water and other drinks, soups, syrups
    • Creams, lotions and oils
    • Perfumes
    • Sprays
    • Gels, including hair and shower gels
    • Contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants
    • Pastes, including toothpaste
    • Liquid-solid mixtures
    • Mascara
    • Any other item of similar consistency

So play it safe and place in a clear bag. Each item should not be over the 100ml limit :)

I think most people will want to put it all in a resealable transparent plastics bag.

The problem here is that most airports will only allow people to take one of them with a pre-defined dimension. For some people this might not be enough space to put all of their items if they have to include the items which is not clear to be categorized as liquid.

You're only allowed 1 20cmx20cm bag, if you can't fit all your liquids, gels and pastes into one bag then you'll need to ditch some of it before you go through security.
