Just read through most of this thread, but might have missed something, but as far as I can see :
    1) OP promised to pay £x to the neighbours for the erection of a fence on a certain date.
    2) OP had cash flow problems and could not pay the cash on certain date.
    3) Neighbours became upset and threatned legal action and threw in some nastyness.
    4) Now Neighbours feel OP should pay full cost of fence.
    5) There is no receipt.
    6) OP house is for sale and wants to sell.

    About right?

Both of you have been unreasonable, but I feel the brunt of this is at the feet of the OP.

You agreed to pay £x amount on a certain day. So what that there was no paper contract and it was just verbal. Its your neighbour, not a multinational we are dealing with here.

Its not their fault that you had cash flow problems. How do you know that paying it in full didn't cause them financial hardship?

If you were on here in their shoes, asking for advice, you get people quoting that a contract is a contract, verbal or not. The advice would be to get some legal advice, and perhaps even to remind your neighbour that he wants to sell and putting on some loud music during a view might be a good way to get your message across!

Talking about whose fence it is, and responsbility is a moot point, because you agreed to pay half. Writing letters to neighbours via recorded delivery etc, comparing old fence to new fence, all lunacy. Sorry. You had an agreement.

The lack of receipt could be a problem. But the time to question this is long gone IMO. You missed the boat and lost all your bargaining chips by not paying when you said you would.

They are now being unreasonable asking for the full price, but were are talking a few hundred quid here, who what not want to be unreasonable?

My advice, go around with your half of the cash, and probably a bottle of wine/beer/whatever and try to repair the bridges. Sounds harsh? Well, you want to sell the house right? What % of the asking price is this fence money, and 10 minutes of your time trying to talk them round and a bit of sweet talk?

    Jusy my opinion.
    Some Bozo.

well said SomeBozo... these are your neighbors pay them half the money and get on with your life. :kisses3:
