  • 40% thats ghey, thought it would have been 20% for me only being on 32k.

Id need 888 holdings to double in value or CGM or RNK to quadruple+ to hit the gains tax barrier.

I guess your dealer would snitch on you too :(

Small correction, but it's £9200 p/a allowance, and you pay at the CGT rate of 40% for any realised gains (excluding taper relief) rather than your usual income tax rate.
Another correction ;) . There is no "CGT rate", the chargeable amount is put on top of your other income to decide the rate charged, it could be 10%, 20% or 40%:

Hmm, so it is... My bad, I must have either read some bad information or got it all mixed up in my head!

Thanks for the correction, that could have been embarrassing at some point!

EDIT: I think my mistake came about because every example calculation I've seen so far has been for higher rate tax-payers, and the paragraph on the actual rates in my learning material is not exactly prominent! Thanks again for the correction!

Tell me about it. I almost bought £3000 NR shares at 265 on Monday. I got as far as inputing my Debit card number, all I had to do was click "submit" and I would have been laughing! I bottled it though and backed out. Gutted.

My A&L shares are going great guns and the HBOS ones are starting to move into positive territory. The NR opened wel but fell back due to profit taking. I'm thinking they will go north again when people realise that due to the massive rate cut my the US, the problem with the credit crunch will recede and banking shares will recover.

  • Strong bull run on a+L there will be some corrections on the way up due to profit takers. Risk - any bad news will stop it in its tracks.

Looks like your quids in on it dithering
  • Hate to be the bringer of bad news but NR had dropped to around £2.61 and now suspended, according to Hoodless Brennan :-(
    PLEASE DO NOT STEAL

  • Yep your right, probably a combination of profit takers and maybe the good old fashioned hedge fund shorts attack. That is the risk you take- A+L also dropped sharp on the news, but then again A+L is a sound company so its nothing to worry about.

I must admit I crapped myself when I logged on and saw them at 253 - they just changed to 262 (anywhere quicker than Yahoo?). This share thing isn't good for my ticker! (See what I did there?!)

Thanks for the earlier poster mentioning Hoodless Brennan - strange name, not heard of them before, but less than half the price of Shareview.

It's a quick learning experience for me!
