I'd bin it, it's too far out of date to risk it.

    Nonsense. :p

Earlier this year I used a yoghurt to make a cake. On its birthday! ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Hi, if it has not been opened, its probably fine. but as with all stuff, in date or not I always give them the smell test and taste. I regularly buy food months past its best before date. Its only the use by dates you have to concern yourself with, not the best before.
  • I wouldn't risk it because it contains dairy and meat and is more than a year out of date! I'm all for money saving, but how much money will you lose if you're off work with food poisoning? It's not worth a £2 jar of sauce.

I'd smell it and taste it - if all seemed fine I'd eat it - i don't let printed dates rule my life... we have our senses for a reason.

    Hope its yummy :)

Yup I'd open it have a tiny taste on your finger, smell it and if its smells ok then give it a go.BBF doesn't mean it will kill you after I was brought up without all the date stuff and I'm looking 70 up the rear and still alive and kicking and believe me often when a kid unles it walked off the plate we ate it as food was far too valuble to waste. If the vacuum has blown you will smell it as soon as its open in which case chuck it out

Cheaper than having a colonic irrigation tho and with the same effect!
  • if you look on the sites that sell out of date food, you'll see plenty of things like this sold which are this far over their bbe date.

Unfortunately, a lot of the replies here are showing a very poor understanding of what is preserving the food in jars and do not seem to be making any distinction between best before dates and use by dates.

Confusing best before and use by is probably harmless if you're just not eating anything past these dates - but you may be throwing out otherwise good items.

Not understanding how jars work is a potential hazard though. Comments like they're full of preservatives worry me because the fact is they're not. Once you open it that food is good as fresh and needs to be stored properly and consumed fairly quickly. The long best before date is based on the condition that the jar has remained sealed until use.
  • Would it be ok to use semi skimmed milk that is a few days past its use by date but is not smelly or anything to make white sauce? Seems a shame to pour it down the sink and use fresh if it would be ok. Thanks.
