I am sure some would be shocked but I found a jar of sweet and sour sauce the other day ( don't even know where it came from as I hate the stuff and am sure I did not buy it..lol) I opened it and it smelt ok , well as good as it ever probably did and so I used it to make chicken sweet and sour for hubbys tea, I tried it and it tasted ok and he eat it all with no problems.
It was only when I washed the jar out for recycling that I found the sell by / use by date ( it was listed just like that )of May 2007....LOL

Atora light vegetable suet - I have an unopened packet with b.b.e. March 2011.
If it smells and looks OK, would it be risky to make dumplings to eat, please ?
It will probably be ok. Don't leave it for a couple of years past the sell by date though - I did that once, made a lovely looking pudding and spat out the first mouthful as it was rancid as anything :eek:0 -
Rice query - tonight I opened a bag of A**a easycook basmati rice which I bought about a month ago and is best before April 2013, however, it has a strange musty/fousty smell ,rather mouldy smell actually. I cooked some in my microwave rice steamer and it still smelt strange. I tried a bit and the taste seemed O.K.
Does anyone know what it might be please ?0 -
We've been so good with not throwing anything out, but the little pack of farmhouse pate has been hiding in the fridge!
Question is the BB date is 13/12 we've already had dinner tonight: will it be okay tomorrow lunch? EeeekFirst home- Oct’16 until June’21: £170.995- Overpayments made £13,784 (25% extra!).

I don't know - i can't smell it from here.
[best before means, it's - well, best before. Not poisonous after.]If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Is it chilled pate? That's usually got an Eat Before date and for pate, it's best to keep to that. If it's tinned on the other hand with a BB date, a few more days won't hurt it or you, nope.Val.0

BB usually means its Best Before - NOT toxic after. BB usually allows a few days after when its safe to eat. with Pate I would allow 3 to 5 days when its ok to eat - unless it is discoloured or smells 'off'.0
