I thinkall this best before has just really got out of hand because of silly rules. We managed perfectly well on common sense before these were introduced. My rule is if it looks and smells alright
    I will eat it.

I dont eat eggs past date but partner has and was ok
I dont understand sell by date on veg - I have bought swedes, cabbages, carrots, potatoes, spring onions, bananas, apples for pennies in the reduced section

The best way to test eggs is to put it in a glass of water. If it floats, discard. If it stays in the bottom half of the glass, it's still good. I keep my eggs in the fridge, so they seem to keep for longer.

I go by the sniff and look principle. If it looks and smells ok, I'll eat it. I've not given myself (or anyone else) food poisoning yet, so I must be doing ok.

To be honest, I think too many people are obsessed by Use by/Sell by/Best before dates. Such a waste of food and money when stuff gets thrown out whilst it's still ok to eat.

i eat most thinsg past there best aslong as theres no mould, i can remeber rarely having non mouldy cheese at home and it really put me off so even tho i know it's ok i won't eat it, not that cheese lasts long enough to go mouldy here

This is good advice. There should be a thread giving average amount of time past sell bys that food can still be eaten. e.g: Milk - 2-3 days etc
Smelling food is the best way to tell.

I found a packet unopened in the cupboard yesterday of Butter Beans dated use by Jan 11, but what can go wrong with dried stuff ? I've never had them and not sure what to do with them but have cooked them this morning.
They can go in the freezer until i find something to do.

I have just been given a frozen small bacon joint dated 15th March '11 by a neighbour doing a freezer audit who will not eat anything past the date on it frozen or not!

She said it would have been frozen on day of purchase.

Will it be OK to feed to hubby? (I'm a veggie but I cook meat for him;))

If yes how do I cook it? never cooked one before.
