One day, I would eat it if it's been in the fridge. Any more than that I'd bin it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

We just had one roasted with the use by date of yesterday, it smelt and looked fine. I think we have to use a bit of common sense with these things and as someone said the chicken doesn't know the exact date its gonna go off.0

Another vote for to see if it's past it's "sniff by date". Supermarket use by dates are notoriously conservative and responsible for an obscene amount of food waste. It will not suddenly grow a fur coat on the stroke of midnight on an arbitrary date. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

I would get someone with a better sense of smell than me to sniff it, if it looks OK and smells OK then cook it, as others have said the dates are not set in stone hope it's OK,0
-
I would open it- leave it for 10 minutes and only then smell it. Often meat smells funny when you first open it because anything wrapped up in stuffy plastic does.
Actually, I would probably just cook it and eat it. I only pay attention to use by dates on fish, and sometimes take liberties there too.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Hi,
Cannot find a definite answer to whether this is "safe" or not? Anybody know please?0 -
How far past the date?
Does the carton look normal, not blown?0 -
Is it a best before or a use by date? If it was a best before and the carton not blown out (as Bronnie says), I'd probably use it.
And if it didn't taste/look right, it'd go on the compost.0 -
Thanks for the replies. October 2011 is the expiry date. Looks normal and not blown.0

I open it up and if it smells ok and tastes ok then it probably is ok.I am a great believer in the power of my nose when it comes to consuming things.BBd and use before wasn't heard of when I was a young sprog and I'm still around
