I think Mot's biggest 'crime' was to use the housing benefit for other purposes (and I'm not judging you here Mot) if you choose to have direct payments then it should be used to pay the rent - period.
She used it for food/existing, I don't think anyone should go without food.
From experience I know that those who shout loudest get heard!
That's a shame, you'd like to think that this wasn't the case.

[quote=Gforce;6448510 The biggest problem we face is that we just don't have enough properties to meet demand, right to buy and a restriction on new builds means that every year the housing stock dwindles.

Hiya guys i think this sums our government up in one fell swoop. Latest info shows there are currently in the region of 216,000 properties boarded up and in disrepair in the uk, majority of them council housing, yet the government would rather build new properties as it is cheaper to over run our countryside and not help people like MOT than it is to refurb the boarded up properties.   I think if the properties were renovated more people like MOT would be able to be housed, quickly and have the right support that she so clearly deserves and the countryside woulde be left alone rather than overrun with "affordable housing" which helps no one other than those able to get on the property ladder.

Great post by the way Gforce.

    "Hello,

response. I am also yet to look at your finances and cannot give you a specific date when your decision will be made. I will keep you informed and hope to be as

quick as possible. Meanwhile if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email.

As I have already said I wasn't judging Mot, she is in a very difficult and stressful situation at the moment and I wish there was something I could do to help. But I stand by what I said, housing benefit is to pay for rent and shouldn't be used for anything else. If someone is struggling for food or to exist then they need to be proactive and do something about it, there are lots of organisations out there. Of course sometimes the person is in no fit state to help themselves, I'm not saying that Mot has deliberately put herself in this situation.

The court hearing was on Monday 17th September, I rang LA that afternoon and again 5 times on the Tuesday, Wednesday am I spoke to the Head of the Housing Dept who said someone would call me back. I rang at 12.30pm again and finally had a call back from them at 1.30pm that day to be told she couldn't see me until the following Tuesday (25th Sept), then had to go and see her again on the Thurs (27th), she was off on the Fri and Mon and back in y'day - all that time wasted

Mot, find out who your local councillor is and ring them now, we often have decisions changed/overriden by our higher ups because of councillor/mp involvement. Contact shelter again and see what the next step is and what they can do to help you. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil! Though do also remain calm and polite of course.
The homelessness officer will have a timescale that she has to adhere to when making these decisions, do you know what that is?

Hi Gforce, no I don't the timescale - what do your HLO's have to work to do you know?

I'm on the phone now to a local county councillor leaving a message! Have rung local councillors and left messages only heard back from one who wasn't re-elected so couldn't help!!!

This particular CC is friend of mine who's area is Children, Schools and Families and as he is friend I have left him as a last resort - we see him and his wife socially (at each others houses) so I felt embarrassed but now have 'bitten the bullet' and put pride to one side and asked him to call me urgently!

I don't know what it's like where you are but where I live the council isn't allowed to build new council houses. All we can do is make it a condition of the planning permission that a small proportion of the houses will be affordable/shared ownership/owned by housing associations and that the housing associations use our list to rehouse from. We nominate people to the housing association and they cherry pick who they want.

We don't have any boarded up/empty properties - well apart from the ones we have to board up whilst we are waiting for new tenants to move in because if we left them unboarded the neighbourhood kids will smash all the windows and c**p in the front room!
