  • Fellow MFWers - can I ask for your advice please. Do any of you have boiler breakdown insurance? We do, and pay £18.95. I think we could get it cheaper, but am also wondering if it's worth having at all?

    All thoughts welcomed xx

Hi ATB, we used to have boiler breakdown cover when we first moved in 10 years ago for a few years and it cost about £10 a month. We decided to cancel it and just put the money into the EF account. We had a problem with the boiler in October last year (There was a hole in the pipe that leads outside!) and we called out British Gas. It cost £245 altogether and that included the initial callout (they had to shut the boiler off until they had the parts delivered. This was on a Friday and they couldn't get parts until Monday so we had to go all weekend without hot water and had to boil the kettle to wash and wash up the dishes but they did say it was dangerous because the hole meant that carbon monoxide could be coming into the house!) the second attendence to fix it and the parts. This didn't seem a bad price to me but I've never had anything done on the boiler before so I have nothing to compare it to! I hope this helps!
Mortgage Balance as of July 2025 £14,900.

  • Thanks Jessy. I have bitten the bullet and cancelled it - a quick online search shows we can get it at around half the price. But we may well just put the money to one side like you did.

Something to think about, but I am pleased we have cancelled it. it's amazing what direct debits you get used to seeing as being the "norm", which still need to be re-assessed regularly.

  • We've never had boiler cover but we did have to spend £300 on our boiler this year (first time we've ever spent anything in 5 years of living together so not too bad!)

We know we will need a new boiler in 5 years ish so will be putting money aside for that instead!

Definitely worth routinely checking what DDs you have, some you can reduce and some cancel and it all adds up!

We were paying about the same as you ATB, but knew we needed a new boiler - so I cancelled and save the money for a few months (to put towards it). Now it has a 7 year guarantee, so we don't need the cover. I did look around and it does seem you can get it much cheaper - but like everything, you have to keep switching!

No boiler cover here either! When it broke down, we got it fixed for around £150 and I thought that was a bargain!
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!
  • Good Afternoon All :)

Busy, productive but lovely day so far. DD went back to school today so the house is a little more peaceful with just me and DS!

Done absolutely loads of cleaning, sorting, clearing, tip-trips etc - I must be in Spring cleaning mode. I have a few niggly little admin jobs to do (mainly paying odds and sods) which will be dealt with tomorrow. In money news:

    - Boiler insurance cancelled - saving £18.95 a month :)
    - Small ebay sale of £6 - not OPd just in the current account as all the bills go out tomorrow so I may as well leave it there ;)
    - NSD achieved, and tomorrow and Thursday will be as well :T
    - Worked out DH can take a £2k dividend. After over a year without them this is very welcome! It will just see us into the 20s :T

Have lovely evenings all and remember, NEEDS not WANTS xx

    Morning all :)

    Today's jobs:

    - list two things at least on eBay
    - ensure I have a NSD
    - some work for DH

Normal mortgage payment has gone out today which will have taken around £320 off the balance in capital. Once online banking catches up tomorrow it will all be clearer.

    Have marvellous days all x

Thanks themadvix. We have had some tough times over the last 12 months with the business so it's good to see things turning in our favour now.

OP of £999 made, the most I can send in one transaction. Will send another chunk tomorrow, I am so looking forward to the 20s!

eBay item just sold for £10, and another for £8, will OP now x
