I'm concerned about this, my ds goes to college now and is entitled to full ema (we are a low income family), he would like to learn to drive etc.. so he got off his bum and put out over 50 cv's we had the usual responses, not enough experience etc... had his trident experience down for a reference, well he slogged on and finally got a job the only place that would employ him, Burger King and to be honest he got some stick about it off his mates but he earns £4.70 an hr, they are really flexible. DS plays a lot of sport and they give him hours 12 a week as recommended by college that work around his sports, voluntary work and college. and at the end of the day he is working for what he wants. we have raised him on a mentality if you want someting you work for it. the op here seems as previously stated to be a bit spoilt!

  • yes and £30 a week equals 1500 so were are they getting the running costs, petrol, car

Not to mention what are they spending on when they get were there going

No one on EMA alone could afford a car

The last word I will say on the matter is that they do work aswel but even still, without EMA they couldn't afford the car and with it they can so it is seriously flawed. No-one thinks EMA is a fair system, even some people who are eligible don't claim for this reason and I applaud them but another person I know has just been given a second-hand car by his brother, gets £20-£30 a week from his parents, works 15 hours a week gettin £5 a hour and has just applied for EMA thinking that variable income or something can get them into the £10 a week bracket, now that's excessive!
  • I was earning £6.50 an hour when I was at school so I had zero money concerns and generally got !!!!ed every weekend

do you know this to befact?

    no.....

lets not get into then, as you don't know the FACTS!

    you think you know!

it also means, whoever Miss X is, that they saved the total amount of EMA up and have spent it after the 2 year course has finished, it means they will now have graduated and gone on to other things like Uni or into work. Perhaps in the equation (that you don't know) may have been a bonus paid to them from Bank of Mum and Dad or another relative!

    Maybe.

All I am saying is if the bank of mum and dad is bulging enough to give money out here and there, why is this mystery person on EMA?

  • I'm going to log off after saying this but basically, I think we all agree EMA is a flawed system, rewarding by parents earnings and not by effort or talent. Many universities are much fairer, e.g. giving out a bonus to people who have made an effort and got 3 A's.

the point of ema is not to stop people working it is in case the family has a low income and would find it a financial burden for the young person to continue in education. I can't work out if your issue is that your hard up, or you want a job or you want more ema. Or your just bored on a sunday and thought you'd wind a few people up. i don't think ema is a flawed system, because you only get it if you forfil your college attendance, if you don't go it stops.

First sensible comment of the day. I want a job and can't get one while people are doing the double with a job and EMA which irritates me no end! That's life so I'm just going to deal with it! Cheers everyone!
