Ema

EMA is honestly one of the unfairest schemes and a massive waste of time in my opinion. As an A-level student, I don't qualify but over half of my year do and get £10-£30 per week just for going to school and this is supposed to keep them from working and concentrate on their education. All it is doing at the moment is force all those who don't get it, like me, into job hunting to try and get money to afford all the things they are now affording such as going out, cars etc. I work all summer and save around £400 every year to try and tide me over but it's hard to spend less than £10 a week to get through to the next summer so it looks like I'm going to have to get a job. All schools and colleges tend to be completely opposed to working and studying but EMA forces those who don't get it into work and furthermore, alot of those people who get EMA I know to work part-time anyway. Finally, they don't spend the money on anything school related as they have already bought uniform and stationary before they get it (which isn't very expensive at all) and they don't need to anything else all year! Rant over!

  • i thought the point of the EMA was too give money to the kids of
parents who don't earn over £30,000 and that £30.00 a week would
be quite a large sum and would stop them leaving school alltogether.
therefore it follows your parent/s earning over £30grand and could afford
to pay you directly in pocket money or indirectly ie expensive clothes, hobbies
holidays,DVD CD, and the old mum a want routine etc etc

    That's the theory......
In reality (in our school at least) I don't know a single sixth-former who would say that the EMA plays a major part in the decision to stay in education - it does cause resentments betweeen those who are eligible and those who are not, though.

Yes, have to agree on that one - from what I've seen kids have a spending spree on it, go to the pub, new gear etc. Not saying this is always the case though.

I'm not sure why it even exists - when they get to HE, there is no EMA, no child benefit to help parents fund their child at uni, and very little help for those students whose parents won't pay.
  • Oh come off it to not qualify you need to have parents earning more than 30k

If your parents are earning over 30k they should be supporting you more than someones who earn 10 or 20k

Likewise I dont think the point is to prevent all work, its to prevent students having to work ridicolous hours if their parents cant afford to support them

In honesty the OP comes across as a spoilt !!!!! who wants everything but not to work for it

Most 16-8 YO's should have some employment imo, even if its only 10 hours a week

    Its part of their development

This scheme is helping families on low/modest incomes. There are expenses, such as materials and books to be bought throughout the 2 years. As with other benefits from the government once the benefit is paid the decision is then with the claimant as how to spend it.
  • well to repond to a couple of things said above. I want a job but there isn't very many in my area and the only supermarket only pays £3 an hour which is pretty low compared to tesco's £4.50+ an hour (over a whole year the extra £1 an hour would really build up) plus the teachers won't give a reference due to the school's hard stance on part-time jobs. Secondly, I get little or no money from my parents (no more than £10 per week which may sound greedy but I'm already paying for a driving lesson @ £25 a week before even going out). Thirdly, my school only charges £25 a year and provides all books so there are no expenses in that department.
  • just to add aswel, no-one stayed solely for EMA, alot of people didn't even know it existed!

My son is in his 2nd year of 6th form and receives the full £30 per week, he also has a part time job of around 10-12 hours a week @ £3.30 per hour.

Last week he had to buy 1 maths book (2nd hand from the college) @ £10 but new it was £20, he will sell it on at the end of his year.
He has to buy 2 calculators, 1 was £6.99 (on offer) a graffical and a scientific (2nd hand pass on) @ £20, but new I have priced it up at £35.

You do sound envious to me. Most of my sons friends have some form of part time job if they are college. The worst off at present is a lad who is doing an apprentiship and gets £2 per hour!

tis the time to start growing up!

edit to say my son works for min wage. some of your facts are a little out!
