  • If you are so unhappy with your life etc then why not speak to your parents? As said before if you don't qualify for EMA then they must be on a high earnings bracket - can they not spare some money? On a serious note, to 'pay' you for jobs you do around the house? Or to match the EMA??

No I don't have any of them, I'm on my friends computer at the moment in his house. I do walk 3 miles to and from school everyday to save on the bus fare when I can (e.g. not when I've just done 2 hours of running in P.E. as I can't force myself to walk for a further 45 minutes) and this lets me buy a sandwich at lunch. I agree tho, from now on I will get up earlier and make a packed lunch.
so do you expect me (us all) to believe you are 17, at a frieds house, on their internet, made a user name up and came on here to berate the EMA?

  • I'm only joking anyway, everyone is so easy to judge and get into an arguement with. I'm not badly done by in anyway but I do think that nobody deserves EMA because if I can work and support myself according to many of you, why can't they? Thank-you and goodnight (please delete this post now).

Your not being asked to fully support yourself

Your parents are meant to support you with you supplementing the basics for luxuries like nights out and the such

The theory behind EMA is those who have lower earning parents will find they need to use their part for the basics and wont get the luxury elements, EMA is therefore meant to support their income to a higher level so that they are less likely to suffer extreme hardship if they seek education

For the record I dont think EMA is the best way of doing the above, but certainly not for the reasons you listed
  • I do get fed and watered and have enough money to pay for driving lessons from the summer, I just don't understand why some people get to have luxuries paid for by the government because their parents are poor (they swan about in their government-paid-for cars and everyone else has no objection yet someone on the dole is hung, drawn and quatered for it. What can I say?

That's all I wanted someone to say :D but in fairness they do use the money to not only have a good night out but to get their own car etc which is certainly a good incentive to stay in school for if your poor!

Sadly its life there is always someone at it and you cant become bitter for it

For example someone I know gets a £800 p/m flat all paid for him plus their basic benefits for living costs

They'd love to seek a job etc but if they did they'd actually be worse off

The whole benefits system is a joke and tbh you best get used to it

The people worst hurt are those in the intermediary bracket of around say 15k income -30k as they dont earn that much once expenses are gone but their benefits are substantially reduced

my maths is a little off.............but what kind of car can you get (and tax/Insurance, without any other running costs involved in the calculations) for the top payment of £30 per week, that isn't paid in holiday time. Making a rough guide of £1400?

although it would cut down on the trips out and clothes shopping.

None a 17/8yr old would be lucky to insure a car for £30 a week never mind the car cost, petrol and other running costs

Anyone she knows who has a car is clearly working or being subsidised by the parents

Alot more of a car than you can get with nothing! In seriousness tho, they get double that (over 2 years) and including bonuses they get almost £3000 over 2 years.

    £3000 total EMA
    - £60 for school uniform
    - £60 payment for 2 school years
    - £20 stationary
    -£1500 for car insurance
    -£100 for car tax
= £1260 for a car, many full-time workers have cars worth around the same value! Again, I'm not saying I deserve this, I'm just saying they don't.
