Sky Q

  • You do realise you could have replaced all your old equipment for less than that by purchasing from E-Bay etc?
Now you are tied into a new minimum term...

Thank you. Yes, I can see replacement boxes on ebay. But the incremental cost of this scheme is about £50 to get a total technology refresh.

I also see Sky Q boxes on ebay which probably belong to Sky. I wonder whether Sky cards match the serial number of the Sky Q boxes. Can a Sky Q box and LNB be installed an commissioned independently of Sky?
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

It can be installed easily enough I'd have thought but whether it works or not is a whole different kettle of fish.

It is made clear that the Q equipment remains the property of Sky, so some of the Ebay sellers may be in for a nasty surprise, when Sky demands its return.

I don't see why the special cabling for Q cannot be installed independently, but will a Q box still work as a FreeSat receiver, like the Sky+ box does ? Sky encode the PVR facility, so it can't be used after unsubscribing, so they may be able to make the whole Q box unusable, to deter theft.

Another consideration is whether, if someone with an iffy Q box asked to subscribe, a new card would work with the machine or Sky has a way of identifying the machine and can get it repossessed. (similar to the case where an innocent party buys a stolen car, then has it seized to their a financial loss )

My summation would be much the same. Thank you. I presume that the new system militates against a Sky Box becoming a Freesat Box. Even un-returned equipment would become worthless when a customer ceases to contract with Sky.

...which is why you should ask for a hybrid LNB to be fitted -and hang on to the "old" HD+ Box like grim death:)
