It might be worth making a notice of disassociation (think that's what its called) with the all 3 main credit reference agencies - declaring divorce/not living at same address/no financial link for x years etc Get your statutory £2 report from each of them and check for any other links while your at it.
DrSyn - Of course BR's can have bank accounts, how would anyone get paid etc without one? They are unlikely to have accounts with overdraft facilities for a few years but that's what basic account and accounts with optional overdraft facilities are for.0 -
Update - I simply wrote to ask them to close the account ad it had been out of use for years and they closed it.
Why couldn't the lady on the phone have done that?!
Thanks for the update. It's nice for future queries on the same/similar lines.

The same way as before basic bank accounts where available.
1. In cash.
2. Into a savings account.
3. Into an account controlled by someone else. That person would then pay the bills and pass on the money to the BR.0 -

Your views are about 20 years out of date.
1. Most companies and organisations don't pay cash - How do you pay a nurse, engineer or doctor for example in cash?
2. Most BR's are not permitted to have savings accounts, however they are allowed to have bank accounts - its up to the bank to decide what sort of account.
3. Why on earth would someone else need to control a BR's account and pay their bills ? What's wrong with the BR doing it?0 -

You asked:-
"BR's can have bank accounts, how would anyone get paid etc without one?"
My answers are not views, they are just 3 ways in which it could be done.
1. For the examples you quote above, via a bank account. However there are still some who prefer payment by cash. Also there is a black economy out there which still wants paying by cash.
3. There is nothing wrong with a BR paying their own bills. Or handling their own money. However some end up as a BR because they are poor at handling their finances. This then would be a way of dealing with such a situation.0
